Will we see another Black Monday?
If I can remember back to 87 the Friday before "Black Monday" the market dropped and the all hell broke lose on Monday.

Are we headed for a repeat on Monday?

2. No
They've added circuit-breakers, and the Plunge Protection Force would spare no billions to ensure that any decline would be "manageable."

4. Who knows?
Individual economic events are close to 100% unpredictable, but the general trend is not good. The "fundamentals" of our economy are in poor straits, so a downturn is inevitable.

Whether it is annoying or destructive or anything in between depends on how well out holy Leaders navigate it.

5. I quizzed my broker
(about a month ago) and he said no, that inflation wasn't as high as then. I still don't feel comfortable though. This administration is viewed as such a wild card with the rest of the world.

6. Aren't the inflation rates skewed by not including oil prices?
It seems I read that somewhere. If so, we're a lot more screwed than they're telling us, and the inflation rate is a lot higher.

High enough to matter?

17. common sense used to say stock market went up with inflation
because corporate profits increased when there was retail price inflation.

The idea that stock prices move against inflation is a peculiarity of the 90s/00s and some economists aren't sure what the logical basis for that rationale is.

18. The market is dropping because of deflation fears, not inflation.
It's worried we are going into a recession.

7. I think we'll see a rally on Monday
fueled by more funny money from the Fed. This seems to be the pattern, let it go down for a few days, but once it nears the magic 10,000 mark, pump it back up so that the rubes will think it's a safe place to put their social security contributions.

9. Wouldn't be surprised
Republican monetary strategy is and has been a poorly placed idea.

They like to tout how their ideas work, but they keep using the idea of trickle down economics, the idea of pissing on the lowest people by giving the rich more money to spend... only the rich know that the best way to keep their money is to save and invest it.

10. It seems that the myth of the 'Free Market' is belied by the PPT.
Would not a truely free market operate without manipulation by some backroom cabal?

12. It *will* bounce on Monday or Tuesday.
From a technical point of view, that is a sure thing.

People need to not freak out. Because the Dow's number is so large (10,000ish), movements that mean anything tend to be large in number terms.

The stock market has always looked like saw teeth. It's just that movements of a % or two translate into a couple hundred points.

It is completely meaningless over the long term.

14. MSM will push Propaganda Minister Rove's news package from the W.H.
All weekend, claiming that there is now overwhelming support for throwing Social Security into the stock market. BushCo. will be hoping that this news package will prevent a massive sell-off, and lure some buyers.

You know, the same scheme Bush has been whining for to prop-up the stock market, so that it appears all is well.
