As many of you know, I am a student at Boston College, a top school that is also a Jesuit institution. Although the Jesuits are by far the "liberal" branch of Catholicism (and I identify a lot with the ideals of the Jesuits; obviously not all, but the notions of finding God in all things-including science and poetry- is huge with me), the school still finds itself struggling with women's issues (pregnant students are required to move off campus, the school does not offer birth control) and ESPECIALLY GLBTQ issues. I mean, Boston College has been ranked #5 as the most homophobic school in the country- that's shameful. Thanks to a great bunch of students, we've made great progress over the years to create a more tolerant atmosphere. We've hosted "Out of the Closet" nights, for example. Recently, we've taken a more aggressive campaign by joining the "Gay? Fine by me" campaign. One day a year, students show support for our GLBTQ community at BC. Last year, we had a moderate turnout. However, this year, with the target of getting the non-discrimination clause to include "sexual orientation" (which the undergrad government voted overwhelmingly YES on to include, but the admids won't include it), we decided to not only wear the shirts, but to have a university STRIKE and to have a protest and march. We expected mebbe a few hundred students. We had 1,000 + students. We were LOUD, we were CLEAR, and boy, did we send a message. I am SO HAPPY to be an Eagle today. Never underestimate the power of organize protest, because this was a big day for gay rights on campus. So the moral? Don't give up. Organize, organize, be loud, and MARCH!
