It's a scientific non-profit and most cell collections will come from them.

About ATCC
Mission
ATCC is a global nonprofit bioresource center that provides biological products, technical services, and educational programs to private industry, government, and academic organizations around the world. Our mission is to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, and distribute biological materials, information, technology, intellectual property, and standards for the advancement, validation, and application of scientific knowledge.

I also don't believe that ATCC *made* the flu samples, but were probably a distributor of them. However, if you have a link showing otherwise, please post.

It's a very interesting read.

My point is that ATCC is involved in things like this not because they are under some kind of Republican control, but because they are one of the only places that have the cells and cultures like Anthrax.

That being said, it does not remove them from culpability. However, I think the main problem here is the lack of government oversight over where ATCC might send potentially dangerous materials. ATCC's mission is to further scientific research, and they supply labs with various materials world-wide. If the government was diligent in letting ATCC know where they could not provide material, then I suspect ATCC would comply.

For another example of what I'm talking about, take a look at some of the companies implicated in the linked article for providing technology to Iraq. Hewlett-Packard made my PDA and Scientific Atlanta made my cable television set-top box. I promise that neither are being used for nefarious purposes. Every day at my job, I oversee use of instruments from Perkin-Elmer and Finnigan, probably the same instruments that were sold to Iraq. That does not make Perkin-Elmer or Finnigan under Republican control, just companies selling their goods to labs in a country which the US did not successfully blacklist from receiving those goods.

What caught my eye in the article was the involvement of Fisher Controls and Bechtel Group. I would like to learn more about what they were selling in Iraq.

AMERICAN TYPE CULTURE COLLECTION

(Manassas, Virginia)

1985 to 1989 — ATCC is a nonprofit that provides biological products, technical services and educational programs to private industry, government and academia. It sent to Iraq some 70 shipments of deadly germs, which included anthrax bacteria, E. coli bacteria, salmonella bacteria, bacillus megaterium (which causes meningitis), bacillus subtilus and bacillus cereus (which are strains of anthrax), brucella abortus (which causes influenza), brucella melitensis (a bacteria that attacks major organs), clostridum botulinum (a source of botulism), clostridium perfringens (which causes lung failure), clostridium tetani (which causes muscle rigidity), and Francisella tularensis (which causes tularemia).

COVER/Margie Burns

Iraq: The Best of Enemies

Reagan's Ally is George II's Megalomaniac

US businesses built up Saddam Hussein, they'll profit again from taking him down

"The enemy of my enemy is my customer." -- said to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1992 by a US customs official who had stopped the sale to Iraq of detonation capacitors that could be used in a nuclear weapon.

Saddam Hussein received tremendous help from Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and from US corporations, and continues to receive passive economic assistance from the current Bush administration. One article could hardly list everything the Reagan and Bush administrations have given Iraq, but even a quick overview suggests the picture.

Reagan official Howard Teicher was a staffer for the National Security Council from 1982 to 1987. He had regular contact with CIA Director William Casey and Deputy Director Robert Gates and traveled with Donald Rumsfeld to Iraq. In a 1995 affidavit for a civil lawsuit, Teicher describes Reagan's Iraq policy as one of consistent, unequivocal support for Saddam Hussein in the war against Iran, when Iran was perceived to be the greater threat (ironically, the fear was that a victorious Iran would then invade Saudi Arabia):

<snip>

"CIA Director Casey personally spearheaded the effort to ensure that Iraq had sufficient military weapons, ammunition and vehicles to avoid losing the Iran-Iraq war ... the United States actively supported the Iraqi war effort by supplying the Iraqis with billions of dollars of credits, by providing US military intelligence and advice to the Iraqis, and by closely monitoring third country arms sales to Iraq to make sure Iraq had the military weaponry required. The United States also provide strategic operational advice to the Iraqis to better use their assets in combat. For example, in 1986, President Reagan sent a secret message to Saddam Hussein telling him that Iraq should step up its air war and bombing of Iran. This message was delivered by Vice President Bush, who communicated it to Egyptian President Mubarak, who in turn passed the message to Saddam Hussein. Similar ... advice was passed to Saddam Hussein through various meetings with European and Middle Eastern heads of state."

"I personally attended meetings in which CIA Director Casey or CIA Deputy Director Gates noted the need for Iraq to have certain weapons such as cluster bombs and anti-armor penetrators in order to stave off the Iranian attacks. When I joined the NSC staff in early 1982, CIA Director Casey was adamant that cluster bombs were a perfect 'force multiplier' that would allow the Iraqis to defend against the 'human waves' of Iranian attackers. I recorded those comments in the minutes ..."

<snip>

The US Department of Commerce licensed 70 biological exports to Iraq between 1985 and 1989, including at least 21 batches of lethal strains of anthrax, sent by the American Type Culture Collection, then located in Rockville, Md., and now in northern Virginia. (It shares one building with George Mason University; its landlord for its main building is the Prince William County, Va., Board of Supervisors.) Shipments continued beyond Reagan under President Bush, after the Iran-Iraq war ended in 1988. In other words, Saddam Hussein was still able to purchase biological products for at least four more years after the justification of US/administration worry about Iran's threat to Saudi oil was past.

20. ATCC sent 6 strains of Clostridium botulinum to U. of Baghdad
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 09:12 AM by Skinner
These records were a 1994 Senate Banking Committee report and a 1995 follow-up letter from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Senate. The CDC is a deeply corrupt New World Order attack arm and exists to proliferate disease rather than prevent it. The full checklist of horrors that the U.S. government graciously handed over to Iraq included the following,

· Anthrax: The American Type Culture Collection, a biological samples repository in Manassas, Va., sent two shipments of anthrax to Iraq in the 1980s. Three anthrax strains were in a May 1986 shipment sent to the University of Baghdad, which UN inspectors later linked to Iraq's biological weapons program. A 1988 shipment from ATCC to Iraq also included four anthrax strains.

· VX Nerve Gas: The Iraqi Air Force began using chemical agents against Kurdish resistance forces in northern Iraq in late 1987, provoking outrage on Capitol Hill, particularly after the now infamous March 1988 attack on the Kurdish village of Halabja. This was cited as a fundamental reason justifying the invasion of Iraq.

· Pralidoxine: An antidote to nerve gas which can be easily back-engineered to create nerve gas. U.S. Defence Department Documents detail that Britain sold the drug to Iraq in March 1992, AFTER the Iraqis had gassed the Kurds and AFTER the end of the Gulf War. The Sunday Herald reported,

22. Wonder if ATCC had anything to do with the Ft. Deitrick strain of Anthrax
Edited on Fri Apr-15-05 09:58 PM by screembloodymurder
Bingo! I think we just hit the trifecta. Now we have ATCC, the CIA, Ft. Deitrick, MD, antrax and this little gem all in the same article.

"Thousands of researchers, doctors and public health officials around the world believe that the U.S. Armed Forces, the CDC, the CIA and other governmental agencies and private foundations are responsible for inventing and spreading numerous diseases in the U.S. and in the Third World, including AIDs, Ebola and Lyme Disease. The purpose behind spreading these diseases-a number of which appear to have been spread through vaccines-can only be explained by one thing-a Eugenics depopulation agenda. This just happens to be exactly the plan that various corporate, U.N. and governmental institutions have been advocating for the past 90 years. The Rockefeller family and its various front groups and foundations has been the world's number one promoters of Eugenics and population control."

23. As a historical background
Deliberate Biological Warfare Was Used Against The

Native Population As Early As 1763.

http://www.nativeweb.org/pages/legal/amherst/lord_jeff.html

Smallpox blankets

Lord Jeffrey Amherst was commanding general of British forces in North America during the final battles of the so-called French & Indian war (1754-1763). He won victories against the French to acquire Canada for England and helped make England the world's chief colonizer at the conclusion of the Seven Years War among the colonial powers (1756-1763).

Despite his fame, Jeffrey Amherst's name became tarnished by stories of smallpox-infected blankets used as germ warfare against American Indians. These stories are reported, for example, in Carl Waldman's Atlas of the North American Indian . Waldman writes, in reference to a siege of Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh) by Chief  Pontiac's forces during the summer of 1763:

... Captain Simeon Ecuyer had bought time by sending smallpox-infected blankets and handkerchiefs to the Indians surrounding the fort -- an early example of biological warfare -- which started an epidemic among them. Amherst himself had encouraged this tactic in a letter to Ecuyer.

<snip>

It is not known who conceived the plan, but there's no doubt it met with the approval of the British military in America and may have been common practice. Sir Jeffery Amherst, commander of British forces in North America, wrote July 7, 1763, probably unaware of the events at Fort Pitt: "Could it not be contrived to Send the Small Pox among those Disaffected Tribes of Indians? We must, on this occasion, Use Every Stratagem in our power to Reduce them." He ordered the extirpation of the Indians and said no prisoners should be taken. About a week later, he wrote to Bouquet: "You will Do well to try to innoculate the Indians by means of Blankets as well as to try every other method that can serve to Extirpate this Execrable Race."

24. STUBBORN PERSISTENCE OF AFRICAN AMERICANS IN REPRODUCING, AMALGAMATING

The most important American political event in those preparations for Hitler was the infamous `` Third International Congress on Eugenics, '' held at New York's American Museum of Natural History August 21-23, 1932, supervised by the International Federation of Eugenics Societies.@s9 This meeting took up the stubborn persistence of African-Americans and other allegedly `` inferior '' and `` socially inadequate '' groups in reproducing, expanding their numbers, and amalgamating with others. It was recommended that these `` dangers '' to the `` better '' ethnic groups and to the `` well-born, '' could be dealt with by sterilization or `` cutting off the bad stock '' of the `` unfit. ''

Italy's fascist government sent an official representative. Averell Harriman's sister Mary, director of `` Entertainment '' for the Congress, lived down in Virginia fox-hunting country; her state supplied the speaker on `` racial purity, '' W.A. Plecker, Virginia commissioner of vital statistics. Plecker reportedly held the delegates spellbound with his account of the struggle to stop race-mixing and inter-racial sex in Virginia.

The Congress proceedings were dedicated to Averell Harriman's mother; she had paid for the founding of the race-science movement in America back in 1910, building the Eugenics Record Office as a branch of the Galton National Laboratory in London. She and other Harrimans were usually escorted to the horse races by old George Herbert Walker--they shared with the Bushes and the Farishes a fascination with `` breeding thoroughbreds '' among horses and humans.@s1@s0

Averell Harriman personally arranged with the Walker/Bush Hamburg-Amerika Line to transport Nazi ideologues from Germany to New York for this meeting.@s1@s1 The most famous among those transported was Dr. Ernst Ru@audin, psychiatrist at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Genealogy and Demography in Berlin, where the Rockefeller family paid for Dr. Ru@audin to occupy an entire floor with his eugenics `` research. '' Dr. Ru@audin had addressed the International Federation's 1928 Munich meeting, speaking on `` Mental Aberration and Race Hygiene, '' while others (Germans and Americans) spoke on race-mixing and sterilization of the unfit. Ru@audin had also led the German delegation to the 1930 Mental Hygiene Congress in Washington, D.C.

25. ATCC, the CIA, and the Ft. Deitrick bio-warfare lab
A year before the NYC WNV outbreak, a group including Oravax Vice President Dr. Thomas Monath met with President Clinton in an attempt to get the government to purchase and stockpile large quantities of Oravax vaccines. Along with Dr. Monath, who was previously a top researcher at the Army's Ft. Dietrick bio-warfare lab, were New York City's Office of Emergency Management Commissioner, and the head of the CIA. The group also included Dr. Joshua Lederberg, the former president of Rockefeller University (another site of federal bio-warfare research). In 1994, Dr. Lederberg headed the Pentagon Gulf War Illness study which concluded that American service personnel in the Gulf had not been exposed to biological warfare materials. While chairing the Pentagon study, he also served as Director of American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), an organization which has admitted to shipping 70 bio-warfare samples to Iraq, including West Nile Virus.

27. Who's the Real WMD Threat?
Who's the Real WMD Threat?
How the Bush administration's biological weapons buildup affects you

Heather Wokusch, Antiwar.com

April 15, 2005

News that a U.S. company recently sent vials of a 1957 pandemic flu strain to laboratories across the world < http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=541&ncid=716
&e=6&u=/ap/20050413/ap_on_he_me/pandemic_flu_labs ... > by accident is only the latest outrage from the billion-dollar boondoggle called the federal biological weapons program.

As you might recall, the Bush administration started its "bio-defense" spending spree following the September 2001 deadly anthrax attacks, and one of its first projects was to genetically engineer a super-resistant, even more deadly version of the anthrax virus.

Our leaders are nuts.

Unfortunately, Project "Anthrax" Jefferson < http://www.corpwatch.org/print_article.php?&id=10494 > has good company.

A U.S. Army scientist in Maryland is currently trying to bring back elements of the 1918 Spanish flu < http://www.motherjones.com/news/outfront/2004/03/02_400.html
>, a virus that killed 40 million people. And a virologist in St. Louis has been working on a more lethal form of mousepox (related to smallpox) – just to try stopping the virus once it has been created.

Lack of oversight and runaway spending are exacerbated by the Bush administration's disrespect for the internationally recognized Biological Weapons Convention. In short, reduced pressure on weapons labs to issue declarations and allow inspections means less accountability – and more opportunities for secrecy and abuse.

Put bluntly, the increasing number of stateside bio-weapons blunders should come as no surprise. In February 2003, for example, the University of California at Davis (UCD) took a full 10 days to inform nearby communities that a rhesus monkey had escaped from its primate-breeding facility. Coincidentally, UCD had been vying for government funds to set up its own "hot zone" bio-defense lab that could use primates for biological weapons testing. If that monkey had been infected with ebola or some other virus, it's unclear when or if the public would have been informed.

At roughly the same time that the monkey ditched UCD, the Pentagon unearthed over 2,000 tons of hazardous biological waste in Maryland, much of it undocumented leftovers of an abandoned germ warfare program. Nearby, the FBI was draining a pond for clues into 2001's anthrax attacks.
