Vigil planned in response to "Justice Sunday" -Apr. 24
http://www.clnnlc.org/

Clergy and Laity Network and DriveDemocracy call for a National Prayer Vigil on April 24th in response to the proposed national telecast by the Family Research Council.

Senator Bill Frist has joined with this organization and they are attacking the faith of Democrats and progressives in a cynical, partisan effort to win support for a handful of extremist judicial nominees. The Council is on record saying that Democrats are "against people of faith."

For more information on the disheartening comments that Senator Frist supports, read the article at the New York Times.

Click here to download Clergy and Laity Network and Drive Democracy's press release.

More information on the prayer vigil will provided soon.

I'm Catholic and I am appalled at the hierarchy. We, Catholics, must break our silence... I am tired of sitting in the pews quietly dropping money in the basket listening to bs.

I want my church back... The Church used to stand up for the little people. The hierarchy has sold us out for 3 pieces of gold aka the faith-based initative and school vouchers.

I am Polish, Catholic, pro-union, pro-environment, progressive, and, by the Grace of God, Democratic!

6. Here's the press release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Clergy and Laity Network and DriveDemocracy call for National Prayer Vigil

A coalition of progressive religious leaders and organizations today expressed outrage that Republican leaders are attacking the faith of Democrats and progressives in a cynical, partisan effort to win support for a handful of extremist judicial nominees.
Such an action is immoral, deceitful, and beyond the pale of even politics as usual. We call on Senator Frist to immediately cancel his plans to attend the event, and we urge all elected Republicans to condemn this wholesale attack on the religious practices of their political opponents.

According to the New York Times, Sen. Majority Leader Bill Frist will join an organization called "The Family Research Council" in a national telecast on April 24. They are calling it "Justice Sunday." They are saying Democrats want to use the Senate filibuster "against people of faith."

The Clergy and Laity Network and DriveDemocracy.org will sponsor a national prayer vigil on April 24 and urge citizens of all faith traditions to protest this unprecedented and intolerant act by a few misguided, extremist elements.

The CLN and DriveDemocracy are the coordinators of a national coalition of more than 60 progressive religious organizations. Their national "Breaking the Silence" campaign kicked off April 4 at Riverside Church in NYC and is continuing with a national barnstorming tour of America. Details of these and other events can be found at www.clnnlc.org and www.drivedemocracy.org.

8. I've been in Riverside Church
it is a very special place and so appropriate for kicking off an act of liberal reclamation, so to speak. MLK gave probably his greatest speech there.

10. Here's how to find a church in your area that will receive the simulcast
Edited on Sun Apr-17-05 01:22 AM by NormaR
If you can't make it to the CLN/Drive Democracy vigil, you may want to organize something locally

This info thanks to post from Roland99 (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=154x498):

We are all aware of "Justice Sunday" ( http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=LH05D02 )

The FRC plans on simulcasting this to churches and persons interested. I don't normally advocate protesting outside of a church but the radical nutcases are forcing our hands. We MUST not let them succeed in this attempt to stage a religious coup in the faux name of Christ.

Clicking the following link (and registering with a throwaway email address) will get you information sent to you on where in your area this simulcast will be held (sent the Fri. before the event)
http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=EV05D03&f=LH05D02

It's originating at Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. I'm presuming at their new mega-location in the east end, a $10 million construction project.

Don't let the Christian Reconstructions turn our great Republic into an authoritarian theocracy!

We should gather a huge crowd and protest vocally and visually in front of this monstrosity!

15. Progressives respond
In response, to "Justice Sunday" several events have been scheduled in Louisville....

On Friday at 10:00 a.m. there will be a press conference at Highland Baptist Church - 1101 Cherokee Road

On Sunday at 2:30 there will be a response (Social Justice Sunday) at Douglas Blvd Christian Church - 2005 Douglass Boulevard - this is being implemented by the Clergy and Laity Network - an interfaith community and will be somewhat spiritual/religious in nature. They have invited several national speakers and are expecting 1000+ in attendance.

Then at 4:30 on Sunday there will be a response by the local Democratic party outside the courthouse downtown.
