7. No explanation
I heard no explanation from any of them as to why they voted as they did. I heard on a local talk show here, Wichita, KS, form the host that the vast majority of his e-mail was about the bankruptcy legislation.

Things are pretty hectic right now on the left coast, but I did listen to the archive of last Saturday this morning...at 4am! Thanks to Ben Burch for that. It was a good show; I kept wanting to call in and then remembering that it wasn't live!

I have a few minutes today, and then have to be off again.

36. The Life of Riley - William Bendix
"William Bendix (replaced by a pre-Honeymooners Jackie Gleason in the 1949-50 season) played Chester A. Riley, a likable working stiff and family man who continually ran into trouble when he misunderstood the things that people around him said, usually resulting comic mishaps. Like Homer Simpson, Riley was a father who didn't know best. He assumed that a paid vacation was a layoff or set his home ablaze as he tried to share a quiet evening at home with his family, who desperately wanted to go out.

In listening to the series, it's intriguing how little the structure of situation comedies has changed little over the years. For example, each lead character has his own trademark phrase. Homer exclaims, "Why you little … ," and Riley laments, "What a revolting development this is." Unique to Riley's world, however, is his eerily amusing pal.

46. Thanks for the urls and for mentioning Bernie Ward
The new KGO archives are terrific for listening to him and Ray Talfierro the next day.

Also, John Rothman's KGO show was great this morning on the filibuster issue. Rothman is on Thrusday evenings as well as the wee hours of the weekend. He might be another talker to tap into as he's most articulate and as someone else mentioned, very calm with contrary callers. He was on fire this morning about Tom Delay, as well.

When I moved to California, Ray spoke to my High School class (Menlo-Atherton, in my Junior year).

He starts out very smooth and articulate, just like on his show, and BLAM...out comes the controversy.

It was the first time in my life that an adult spoke to me as an equal, didn't pull any punches, didn't sugar-coat.

So...let me update that list:

41. St. Pete Times editorial on Glenda Hood and elections power grap
You expect Florida lawmakers to play politics with nearly every issue, though not with the very foundation of democracy. Yet here they go again. It's not just the Legislature that is tinkering with your right to vote, but Secretary of State Glenda Hood is leading the way.

Under Hood's suggested rewrite of state law, guess who would end up with most of the power to make decisions affecting your ability to register and have your vote counted? Not the supervisors of elections you put in office to do the job. It would be Hood, who is appointed by the governor and doesn't answer to the electorate.

A key bill states that if the secretary of state spots a "lack of uniformity" in election procedures, she would "have the authority to issue a statement of interpretation of the election laws to the supervisors of elections, the county canvassing boards, or any other officials performing election-related duties." Not only would the secretary's decision be "binding," but the supervisors would be constrained in how they could appeal it and the public would be cut out entirely.

That situation could lead to "extremely partisan" oversight, said Kurt Browning, elections chief in Pasco County and chairman of the supervisors' legislative committee. "The governor becomes the Florida supervisor of elections because the secretary of state works for him," he said.

It is also a great "BUZZ" word for manipulating those who are in denial of the reason this government is creating all of the "national security" problems throughout the world. Of course Lou Dobbs doesn't exactly hold back about all the security that this administration has totally failed in accomplishing in protecting our borders from these terrorists who could so easily penetrate our borders.

55. Now, Henry II of England had a trusted friend whom Henry II...
had made his chancellor. Henry II sought to have more power of the church, so he had his Chancellor Thomas Beckett installed as Archbishop of Canterbury to having "his man" in the top post of the Church . However, Henry II did not anticipate that Beckett's allegiance would totally shift from Henry to the position of the Church. Eventually, Beckett was murdered by four knight of the king.

The point is that when our founding fathers created the Constitution, one of the principle elements was that the "government" wouldn't encroach upon individual religious liberties. How ironic that extremist elements of the Christian Right are attempting to reverse the "knights of the table"! And, I am a God fearing Christian who believes in the "Ten Commandments" and the "Gospels of Christ".

74. That Sounds Like too High a Figure for TV Marti
You might get calls about it, TV Marti runs over 10 million per year and Radio Marti also runs about that much. Now Congress is doubling the amount for TV Marti, which was OK with Sen. Clinton, Sen. Bill Nelson, etc.

TV Marti has probably cost at least 189 million since its inception -- all of which has been $$ down the toilet!!

75. Great show Guy

A very nice gesture to nostamj's memory as THE Guy James Show New York Bureau Chief. If the show ever does a "best of" CD, I am sure Jeff would be featured prominently (I would probably reserve your rather inebriated previous caller tonight for the "worst of" CD ;-) ).

76. Get to work, Guy James, on finding out what these horrible Democrats
have done to screw everything up! If you need any guidance, you can probably call the local bar and have the bartender drag that caller out from under the table to help you (some more).
