Ratz's selection was calculated to create a liberalization backlash?
They deliberately selected an OLD pope they already knew was an extreme DIVIDER in Germany and would do the same thing to the US and Europe.

The only possible result will be a demand for the next one to be more liberal, and probably a black or hispanic from a third world country. Ratz got confirmed on the 4th vote, wonder if BACKLASH is what the opposition that crossed over had in mind in the end.

2. That is a very intresting and possible theory
I mean the man is 78 so he wont be around for very long. He would be the perfect candidate for such a move.

3. Doubt it...
Methinks the heirarchy are pretty much in line with Ratty's views.

6. Not a chance...
As I've pointed out elsewhere, a "short term" for a Pope means little if he, like Ratzinger, seems inclined to issue "infallible" proclamations on such matters as forbidding contraception, excluding women from ordination, and possibly declaring homosexuality to be "objectively evil." Even if his years in office are few, his legacy would remain in place eternally.

To my mind, choosing Ratzinger as an "interim" Pope, or even to create a liberal backlash for the next time, is somewhat like giving a gallon of gasoline to the town firebug, reasoning that it will be O.K. because you plan to take it back the next day. :scared:

7. don't forget, the cardinals are nearly all appointed by JPII
Don't forget who appointed the Cardinals -- and JPII had Ratzinger in a VERY powerful position. He got TWO THIRDS of them (77+) to vote for him, and they are hardly likely to desire a LIBERAL backlash. Now the other cardinals will be appointed by Benedict XVI. So the next pope, whether from the Third World or not, will still be conservative. It is a classic example of conservatism snowballing, like in the evolution of the Supreme Court.
