the latest news suggests that he will rsign only to form a new coalition and avoid new elections.. I knew it was too good to be true.

That the BBC banner right now. "More soon."

By doing it this way, he is avoiding early elections. Ah, shucks. If elections were held in Italy now, Berlusconi and the right would be crushed.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio

Berlusconi has said he is resigning but will immediately form a new government.

He told the upper house of parliament that his government had a mandate to lead until 2006 and it would do so.

Mr Berlusconi is expected to visit President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi later to formally tender his resignation.
