Hilarious: Soviet expert Condi flubs speaking Russian!
Miss Genius - NOT.

'Da... Nyet, Nyet, Nyet!' Rice Tells Russians
Wed Apr 20, 2005 06:47 AM ET

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice tried out her rusty Russian in a Moscow radio interview Wednesday, only to get caught out by a question on whether she might run for president.
"Da (Yes)," Rice answered in Russian, before realizing her misunderstanding and hastily adding "Nyet" (No) -- seven times.

Rice's interview on Ekho Moskvy radio turned into a linguistic ordeal when the Soviet expert and former provost of Stanford university fielded a schoolgirl listener's question on how she achieved her career success.

"It's too complicated to answer!" Rice, in Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin, started out in English. "It is an opportunity for me to come back to Russia, a place I love very much. I love the culture and the language."

She then switched into Russian, but quickly hit trouble.

6. Bush did the same thing
When he was there he did the same thing. The only reason why is because they KNOW they own the media here so they had to do something to save their asses because of all the bad press (real press) over there.

5. Perhaps she should have remained in academia?
Where her obvious naivete' and gullibility would not have been so destructive to the country.

14. How many other provosts do you know?
I know a couple, personally.

Trust me. It's not that impressive. It's a position usually attained by the most aggressive infighters who don't really feel like keeping up with their field's research anymore. Mind you, plenty of good people, but I wouldn't really do backflips over them. Plenty of professors quietly toiling away on a few problems are much, much more impressive. I can see why Condi had to dump the Sovietology bit after 1991...pretty clear that the research in the field had, well, become irrelevant. Thus, nasty Dr. Rice gets herself elevated to provost, no doubt with much fundage flowing from the absurdist Hoover Institute at Stanford. Still impressed?

7. Fluency's relative ... I'm "fluent", but wouldn't go on the radio
with it. And spoken fluency is easily lost.

On the other hand, 'no' and 'yes' aren't always used quite the same in Russian.

Something like, "Did you go to the store?" works the same as in English.

Something like, "You didn't go to the store yet, did you?" doesn't. If I went to the store, I'd say 'yes' in English and 'no' in Russian. _Da_ would mean 'yes, I didn't go to the store yet.'

(And the way you say 'until' ... sigh)

8. She speaks Russian about as well
as * speaks Spanish. It just chaps my hide to hear how smart, elegant, witty and fluent in foreign languages this twit is, when in reality it is all spin. She and all her ilk disgust me. She can't even field the question of a schoolgirl, how the hell does she do it with Russian diplomats? Oh wait, they speak English. Effin' loser.

16. Bush does not speak Spanish
He knows enough to place an order in a Mexican restaurant, and enough to banter with the help. Can utter a few phrases. Does not speak Spanish.

She's just as slow as the rest of them. Her boss must be rubbing off on her.
