Petition DU: Justice Scalia Must Recuse Himself From Church-State Cases
Justice Scalia Must Recuse Himself From All Church-State Cases Due to Bias

http://www.petitiononline.com/scalia/petition.html

To: US Supreme Court Justices

According to the Jerusalem Post, "US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia used an appearance at an Orthodox synagogue in New York to assail the notion that the US government should maintain a neutral stance toward religion, saying it has always supported religion and the courts should not try to change that."

The articles continues with Scalia saying ""The founding fathers never used the phrase 'separation of church and state,'", arguing that rigid separation of religion and state – as in Europe, for example – would be bad for America".

It is unfortunate to note how Scalia's faith has blinded him to our nation's history, especially considering he's a high court justice.

That fact is Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802 clearly stating, "the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state."

Any justice who shows as much bias towards any position as Scalia has clearly demonstrated on this issue should recuse himself/herself from any such cases that come before the court. Therefore we, as US Citizens, must demand that Justice Scalia recuse himself from any future Church-State cases.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

2. Scalia said the FF didn't use the phrase "separation OF church and state"
He is correct. Jefferson's statement is "separation BETWEEN church and state."

Depends what your definition of "IS" is. Just splitting the hairs as finely as possible.

But I agree with you nonetheless.

9. I'm not sure...
I would believe Scalia if he told me rain was wet.

I always know which side of an issue he'll come on. The opposite side I'm on.

5. Just signed
I don't sign a lot off internet petitions, mainly because they are generally so off the wall. Even when they are not, they are usually poorly written.

I don't know if you wrote this or are just passing it on, but it was a pleasure to sign.

6. I did...
I did in fact write it. Although it doesn't matter if it's well written or not, the word needs to be spread and MANY more people need to sign it.

I know there are a lot of people who understand and woul dlove to sign it, if they knew about it. If only it could get out to wider audiences.
