Diabetic driver talks about incident

KSN News

WICHITA, Kansas, 2005418 -- A story we’ve been following continues to get emotional reaction from our viewers. It deals with the way police handled a woman who had been driving erratically. Police didn’t know the woman was having a diabetic reaction.

Christina Deleon, 30 has a broken arm, her head is swollen and her eyes are blackened. The question now is, how did she get these injuries? From a traffic accident or from what police did after it.

"I would think from the way that I feel and the way that I look that it was done incorrectly," said Deleon.

The incident began when a motorist reported an erratic driver, spotting the car in oncoming lanes of traffic. When police moved in, they say the woman was awake but unresponsive.

1. Some jails take away all medicine, including diabetic

and are slow to never in giving it to prisoners

I know, incredible. But i read that again and again over the last years.

"how could that be in america?"

guess we are not a bright beacon like we used to be.

The VOA has a hard-hitting ad on tv, that is so realistic and truth telling, i wonder how long it wil be allowed on tv.

about hmless, about elder poverty, and gangs.

Kudos to VOA . You guys are great.\

volunters of america, not voice of amereica.

PS sixty percent of our elders are in poverty. What an ad for our system to the rest of the world.

2. I don't care what the Cops say.
It didn't sound like a good decision to me.

3. Wichita Cops SOP
They love thumping drunk or intoxicated drivers. I didn't realize they treated the females the same as the men.

6. They beat citizens so they don't beat their spouses? I read a long
time ago that spousal abuse is high among police. Too much pressure.

18. A fucking neanderthal is what that cop is.
I wonder if his wife and kids have seen their heroic daddy brutalizing this woman.

5. As the wife of a diabetic, I'm horrified
Hell, as a member of the human race, I'm horrified!

The first time my husband was "all out of whack" is now something we giggle about as we look back on it. I took the children over to his mother's house. I left him with instructions to get dressed. As soon as I returned, I was taking him to the emergency room. Unfortunately, I found him right where I had left him... at the end of our bed, wearing nothing but his boxer briefs. I tossed him a shirt and a pair of jeans. He just looked at them... then at me.

I grabbed the shirt and began to dress him. He complained it was too tight, it tickled, it was changing colors, etc. I then helped him into his jeans, socks and shoes. He said he needed to go, so I took him to the bathroom. I waited several minutes and then went back to check on him... there he sat, fully clothed on the seat-down potty. He asked when I was going to get in so we could go. *sigh* I informed him I couldn't drive the damn potty and then pushed him toward the car.

These types of antics continued for at least two days. Nurse: "Mr. CornField, we need for you to stand up for us." Hubby: "All the way up?"

I guess my point is that anyone unaware of his medical condition would have probably guessed him to be strung out on something. I don't fault the misdiagnosis from non-professionals. I do, however, fault the complete lack of judgement and compassion for another human -- "strung out" or not.

7. "Police say they made the right move ... under the circumstances"
I'm sorry. I watched the video. The cop was clearly bashing her at the top of her body ... her head.

The cop interviewed said they "feared she might drive off again and they had to take action"

Huh? Lemme get this straight. The cops are outside the car. It can go in reverse only, since cars don't drive sideways and the hood's against a fucking tree.

Don't stand behind the car, asshole.

The woman was unresponsive, so they break the window. I agree. Good tactic.

They pull the woman from the car. Okay, I can go with that, too. I don't like that they just bumped her along the ground ... but okay ... she's out.

Why did the guy have to do a Rodney King Arrest impression? That's the part I don't get.

I'm generally a law and order kinda person ..... but that's just ridiculous.

about being called pigs. Yeah, I said it-pigs. Fuck 'em if they can't take being called out for what they are. That fucking badge and gun make up for their lack of balls.

12. I dare say the overwhelming majority are trying to do the right thing
and to label them all as pigs is wrong.

But .... pigs do exist. And it appears to me, just from the video, mind you, that the cop who yanked and cranked her is a first rate pig.

And these pigs need to be held to a higher standard.

Video cameras are a bitch, huh?

15. Many try to do the right thing,
but by NOT removing the "pigs" from their ranks by any means necessary, the good cops become "pigs" themselves. No excuses are acceptable. If I were a cop, the bad ones around me would start being fired, or horribly injured. Sounds odd, but that's how it is.

Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 01:00 AM by Catholic Sensation
(I'm 22), and know exactly what she went through (the reaction, not the obvious police brutality). I've had different types of physical reactions to both DKA and hypoglycemia, and just wonder what would have happened to her had she reacted to the police as I had when I was seven and started mouthing off to the hospital workers trying to put me on a stretcher (my mom said that was the first time she learned that I knew the word "fuck" and "c-ser" and a bunch of other slurs).

13. even Diabetics have to survive..
the medical supples to live cost at least $10,000 a year. The danger of going into insulin reaction grows with less food, more work, and little sleep. And with highly priced public transportation, no health insurance, and working two or three jobs just to eat..diabetics must also drive.

We all pay a price with no public welfare!

14. They could have killed her.
What if she'd had back or neck injuries. I cannot believe what I just saw. They shouldn't have been afraid she was going to drive off because the first thing they should have done was turn off the car and take the keys. That is outrageous and those cops should all be fired. Brutality is becoming the norm in this country.

16. Life in this "law and order" USA---
"Don't do the time if you can't do the time" blah blah blah. Yes, things are out of whack and yes, cops have HORRIBLY dangerous jobs. But this group of thugs need to be fired and charged with assault with intent to cause gross bodily injury. Sick bullies.

20. if a diabetic fails to monitor his/hers blood sugar level and is involved
in an accident then I would support the suspension or revocation of their drivers license, my ex's father had two accidents w/o injuries and a few other events that scared the crap out of her, If the elderly lose the ability to drive due to eyesight or senilty or whatever I would think that the same should apply to diabetics IMHO. If the result of low bood sugar is erratic driving and poor judgement then what is the difference if the person is drunk? Flame away

23. We're missing a key factor here...
The most important thing is that the police/the victim/the news are all saying, "Oh, gee, they didn't know she was having a diabetic reaction."

The fact of the matter is, that even if she was sitting in the front seat smoking heroin, the moment they dragged her out of the car, the need for use of force ended.

Had she been smoking heroin in the front seat and received that beating, apparently the news in Wichita and the Wichita PD would have accepted it.

This, of course, is inexcusable.
