We are not alone. Some comfort from like thinkers.

I used to read every column. I'm getting better and now only read Brooks on occasion. Like today. His column today was on abortion. He says the world is in a mess because of one justice, Blackman, who legalized abortion which should have been left to the states to legalize, which they would have in good time. (GAG) And if the stupid left would just give up on the issue everything will be right with the world again. (gag a million more time.)

I usually send him an angry email but this time I decided maybe I'd post it on the discussion board about his column. I did, and on and off all day, I've been reading intelligent posts from like thinkers. I tell you, its enough to swell my heart with pride in my fellow Americans.

The column is here: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/21/opinion/21brooks.html?hp
or skip it and go directly to the comments here:

1. The South and other red states never make progress
how long would civil rights have taken if not for the federal government, 200-300 more years?

2. not only the south
in NO state was abortion legal even though a majority of Americans thought it should be. Legislatures are LESS responsive to the will of the people than the courts. The courts follow the constitution and protect us FROM legislatures.

3. regarding David Brooks' comment

This is a rationalization that somehow that we have strayed from the path of righteousness, that some liberal usurpation of power has corrupted our nation and threatens our freedom. Roe vs Wade is not the problem, the problem is the ever increasing role of the Republican party in ruthlessly crushing all opposition in its quest for total control. The fact that almost 2/3 of the American people do not approve of the actions of the current Congress should give them a clue that they have lost their way. Banning the filibuster will enrage the American people and lead to DEMOCRATIC victory in the 2006 elections.
