SS flying to Denver to investigate fake SS at town hall meetings
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 10:50 PM by ailsagirl
Thu Apr 21st, 2005 at 20:28:31 PDT

I got word that the Secret Service is flying to Denver tomorrow to open a criminal investigation on the fools involved in kicking out three people from one of Bush's sham social security "town hall meetings."

The security officials who kicked out the three acted and were dressed like secret service officers, and there's reason to believe they passed themselves off as such. That's a crime.

The big question -- who trained these security people, and all early fingers point to the White House. For the story to date, this column is a good summary.

There's lots more:

1. Wow - this is fascinating.
I suggest changing your title to give a bit more info, such as it is about possible impersonation of a secret service agent. Or something. I'm afraid some people are going to not open this hread because they don't know what "Denver 3" you're talking about. I almost didn't.

Maybe everybody else is better informed.

Thanks for posting this!

3. Oh wow!
I'm glad to hear about this. My guess would be someone from the inside. I think it's no secret that these town hall meetings aren't so town hall friendly. This is good news!!!

4. Impersonating a Secret Service agent
Hmmm ... that's got to be MAJOR jail time! I wonder if the three guys involved are willing to keep their mouths shut and take that kind of a fall.

5. Very interesting!
Like so many other scandals surrounding this WH, it'll probably just go down the memory hole, but who knows...maybe this will be the one that finally brings these bastards down.

6. Well, if you throw enough crap, eventually some will stick
This has been getting some traction in the print media, anyway:

WAPO: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A34078-2005Apr7.html

"On March 21, Leslie Weise, 39, Karen Bauer, 38, and Alex Young, 25 - all members of a group called the Denver Progressives - said a man who dressed and acted like a Secret Service agent hustled them out of Bush's Social Security forum at the Wings over the Rockies museum town hall meeting, because of an anti-war bumper sticker on Weise's car. The man also allegedly threatened them with arrest if they misbehaved."

Denver Post columnist Diane Carman writes about the hunt for the man who ejected the three. "The guy's freakin' radioactive. Nobody will touch him.

"So far, this is all we know: He's about 5-feet-11 or 6 feet tall. On March 21, he wore a navy blue suit, an oval pin and an earpiece. He's stocky - not fat. He's either bald or wears his hair shaved to a barely visible stubble."

But, Carman concludes: "Radioactive Man is going down."

LA TIMES: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/wire/sns-ap-colorado-bush,1,2855378.story?coll=sns-ap-politics-headlines&ctrack=1&cset=true
A lawyer for three activists removed from one of President Bush's town hall events said Thursday that the Secret Service has opened a criminal probe into whether the man who escorted them from the hall was impersonating an agent.

The man was dressed in a dark suit and wore an earpiece when he escorted the three from the March 21 event. The Secret Service has said it has determined the man was not one of its agents, but a staff member with the host committee.

An agent from Washington, D.C., contacted attorney Dan Recht and asked if his clients -- Alex Young, Karen Bauer and Leslie Weise -- could be interviewed this week, Recht said.

The lawyer said he declined the request unless the "mystery" man's name and organization were released.

NEWSDAY: http://www.newsday.com/news/politics/wire/sns-ap-colorado-bush,0,2654080.story?coll=sns-ap-politics-headlines

The White House has said the man was a volunteer who probably feared the three might have disrupted Bush's event. Bauer, Young and Weise acknowledge they wore T-shirts under their clothing that read, "Stop the Lies," but did not plan to reveal them.

The three belong to an activist organization called Denver Progressives. The day after being escorted out of the event, they say they were told by the Secret Service they were singled out because a bumper sticker on their car said "No More Blood for Oil."

The man who escorted the three out did not identify himself, but he threatened Bauer and Weise with arrest if they "did anything" and told them they had to leave because it was a private event, the women said. The three had tickets to the event.

Members of Colorado's congressional delegation from both parties have raised concerns about the case.

8. I hadn't realized so many media outlets had covered this story
I guess I've been in a perpetual state of outrage for the last 5 years. I just have no idea what it's going to take to outrage the 51%+ or the US.

Whatever happened to that piece of work "Gannon?" Has the flurry of indignation over his sleazy persona and illegitimate journalism background subsided completely??

10. Someone will get him drunk, and he'll talk
It will probably happen when he fades from the limelight. He's been digging on the attention, and like a crack ho, he'll do anything to get some of it again once the feeling fades.

15. It absolutely could happen!
Or a celebrity Big Brother, with Monica Lewinsky, the ex-girlfriend of Henry Hyde, JimmyJeff, Gary Condit...it could be totally bipartisan, and the possibilities to fill out the cast are endless. Nothing would surprise me. Actually, it would be a great show to pitch in the run up to the 08 elections...lock all these political has-beens and hangers-on in a house, and film them discussing what they see on cable news re: the elections.

Hell, some network oughta run with that!

13. And who was he in contact with through that earpiece?
Odd for a random volunteer to dress like SS complete with earpiece.

I'm surprised that the SS is investigating. I've gotten so used to all scandals being suppressed and all enforcement arms of the government, indeed all BRANCHES of the government (except some holdouts in the Judiciary) being controlled by the neocons, that I am most startled by what may actually be an investigation.

I'll be beyond shock - but in a good way - if this actually is followed through on and "Radioactive Man" is exposed (hmm...maybe the wrong choice of verbs in this context) WH-associated agent. They'll be ordered to keep silent about it of course.

16. If memory serves
the Secret Service has been having a VERY rough time since a certain group of activist judges rejected the will of the people.

At one point, the White House computers were adjusted so as to prevent the SS from gaining access to the TSA website because they were defecting there.

The Secret Service used to be part of the Treasury
but now it under Homeland Security.
The SS is NOT HAPPY.
We have seen fake advertisements,
fake news,
fake dossiers,
fake journalists working for fake news agencies,
fake Marines
and so it comes as no surprise to now see fake Secret Service men.
But it is nice to see the REAL Praetorian Guard sharpening their swords.
It is about time.

Monday, July 21, 2003
After receiving official assurances that the Washington headquarters of the Secret Service did not authorize or approve of the interrogation of Mr. Ramirez, Chairman Cox expressed gratitude to the agency, but stated that he believes an apology and public explanation are now needed, as well as an official statement that the inquiry has been dropped.

18. I heard a similar story from one of the fake "rallies" during the campaign
Some supposedly SS guys got really tough with a photographer. Even though he had a press pass. He had been to photgraph a Kerry rally and tried to get into a Bush rally in the same town. He was so shaken by the threats of these official thugs that he got back in his camper and drove all the way back to California.

19. This is very serious. Whoever is integrating private security with the
Secret Service is hampering the Secret Service's ability to protect their subject. If someone can get in and pose as an agent, they can get close to the official.

I look for new for new agency rules on identifying and detaining "fake" agents.

20. While I'll hope that an investigation will lead to an awareness
on the public's part that this stuff is going on,I can't help but be pessimistic that anything will happen because if you can out a CIA agent with impunity you can impersonate a Secret Service Agent easily

And count on the fact that 52% won't care

21. When linking a blog story
Try to always use the permalink so the story can be found even after it's archived.

...White House spokesman Scott McClellan... denied that the bouncer was paid staff. "My understanding is it was a volunteer and that that volunteer was concerned that these people were coming to the event to disrupt the event, and that's why he asked them to leave," he said.

Well, who WAS that volunteer? Surely the venue had a list of who was working security that night--and surely the White House had their backgrounds checked!

22. Volunteer schmolunteer.
Since when do volunteers protect the President?

What's to prevent all the DUers to dress in suits and "volunteer" at the next event, then? (Well, aside from the fact that some of us don't own a suit....)

This is just as big a pile of baloney as that pile about how nobody knows how Gannon got into White House press conferences day after day. And, that other pile that nobody knows who outed Valerie Plame, even though it came from the White House apparently.

26. Oh why the hell not?
Okay let me see if I can tell Who's on first. We have security posing as Secret Service in denver. We have CIA agents posing as FBI Agents in Iraq. Which leads me to wonder whether it was the FBI/FBI that questioned a released the Bin Laden's and other Saudi's after 9/11 or if it was the CIA/FBI that did it. But I won't entirely rule out the possibility of it being the Security/FBI. Nope! I haven't got a clue. For all I know we might be super secret secret service agents or even FBI Agents. Who can tell? It's getting to be like Sam Drucker in Hooterville. If you put on the hat you gotta do the Job.
