Oh great historians of DU
I am in a discussion with a right wring acquaintance of mine, and he brought up that Clinton closed the government down in '94.
I know that the Repubs have done that before, but cannot remember the circumstances.
Could someone out there provide me with a little ammo to fire back? I would do the research myself, but I am at work right now.

TIA

ThreeCatNight

16. Newt and the Congress passed
a budget that Clinton said he would veto.

They passed the budget. Clinton vetoed it, so the government had no money and shut down.

So who shut it down?

Clinton's veto, or Newt passing a bill that Clinton warned he would veto?

Each side could blame each other.

12. First get the year right: 1995
If they'd had that showdown in 1994, they never would've swept the Dems out of office.

6. St. Reagan shut down the federal government in 81, 84, and 86
Bush Sr. shut it down in 90.

Those were not as long, but it shows the republicans have no problem using it as a tactic.

17. The Contract With America
was more a public relations stunt than anything else.

Go back and look at it. It was mostly inside procedural crap that didn't make a whle lot of difference.

Term limits for committee chairs, balanced budget amendment, line item veto.

No one could say what was in it. The point was just that the Republicans had a plan.

I think there's something to be learned from that.

If people are looking for an alternative and you have a well publicized plan, it doesn't even matter what the plan says. People just want leaders with a plan.

8. Newt closed it down in Nov. 1995 over budget disagreements.
Clinton and the Dems budget from 93 and 94 were already proving to be winners in tackling the budget problems. Newt tried to bully through the Republican priorities in 95, but wouldn't compromise with Clinton's winning formula, so he shut the govt. down. There was no passed budget in 95.

The GOP always likes to take a good part of the credit for the balanced budget, but, it was already under control when they finally passed their first budget in 96.

9. I happened to be in DC at the time
and was actually observing the House of Representatives when the Repugs shut things down. We were sitting right next to the tv cameras, and one of the Repugs came up and shut the tv off, because the Democrats were staying on the floor and each was making speeches -- beautiful, impassioned and powerful speeches.

They give a good idea of what happened during that time, although keep in mind it is CNN.
