Republican drive to end social programs UNCONSTITUTIONAL

It's all there in the first paragraph, and I quote:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Break it down:

We the People of the United States,

All of us. The government is comprised collectively of the people.

in Order to form a more perfect Union,

Not guaranteeing perfection, but striving for it.

establish Justice,

Judges in a court system where we are tried by a jury of our peers. (Repukes hate this and calls it "judicial activism")

insure domestic Tranquility,

Police force to stop those who would harm others.

provide for the common defence,

Like it or not, this is all about our military forces. Support the troops because the constitution provides for the military existing.

promote the general Welfare,

There's those pesky social programs rich Repukes hate.

and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,

There's those pesky rights the Repukes hate, too.

do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

And thus, it is written into the law of the land.

All people on all sides of the debates in this country would do well to pay attention to this all important first paragraph of our defining document.

3. Next time, make sure you ask them what the constitution provides for
They will always say prosecution of criminals and the military. Agree with them and quote the preamble.

It shuts their idiot mouths up every time.

To which I respond "Oh, then what does it mean?"

Then they usually say "Oh, that means like protecting the public and stuff"

And I say "No, they have separate parts for that, common defense and domestic tranquility, obviously they meant something different"

Then their heads explode.

Hiding in plain sight, right there in the very opening of the Constitution, the authority to promote the general Welfare. Oh geez, it's even capitalized.

Sounds like a guarantee for a reasonable degree of healthcare and economic safety, among other things. There are few things that most people would consider to be more in their general welfare than those.

Thanks, I'm going to be using that alot whenever I hear the standard pick yourself up by your own bootstraps bullshit that is at the core of the right's immoral, and un-Constitutional, ideology.

in the constitution. They will ALWAYS remember prosecution of criminals and the military. Agree with them because they are both there in black and white. And stell the, "let's break it down."

And I agree with them because I believe in them. Enforcement of law, internally by way of the legislature and judiciary, and projected externally in terms of military protection, are necessities of any society.

Providing the next level of societal enablement, promotion of the general welfare, is just as fundamentally necessary for a healthy society. Boy, those guys thought of everything.

Time to make that point everywhere in public discourse, until it's as natural an expectation as clean water and the lights going on when you flip the switch.
