It looks like FEMA inspectors are as crooked as their bosses.

This article just cracked me up:

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-fema24apr24,0,5139773.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines

I remember way back when I was worried about the people at the head of our Federal Emergency Management Agency being corrupt. Somehow, I had just assumed that their underlings were no more corrupt than other civil servants. Wrong!

This article makes it look like FEMA is basically an outlaw biker gang, without the redeeming qualities. How would you like to have your home flattened by a tornado, hurricane, or tsunami, and then have the federal inspector turn out to be one of these guys? Whew!

2. Hmmm...

One of the inspectors mentioned in the article had a past conviction for wire fraud, which is potentially relevant to the topic here.

The rest of them were problem drinkers and/or users of illegal drugs. One guy had *nothing* but marijuana on his rap sheet. Do we think he's a con man? I thought we were the party trying to decriminalize marijuana and keep people that aren't criminals out of jail...

On edit: okay, I hadn't read the whole article, there were more real criminals. But I stand firm on the idea that recreational drug users shouldn't be automatically disqualified from getting decent jobs.

Boy were they ready for the insurance assessment... Do you think they knew they weren't going to be able to fly that day?

6. I totally agree with you on victimless, nonviolent "crimes."

But if this turns out to be any sampling of what the rest of them are like....well, they say bad luck comes in threes: first the disaster, then the inspectors, and then your insurance company goes bankrupt.

4. The problem with FEMA is that it has always been a patronage
dumping ground for individuals who worked on various campaigns and relatives and friends of campaign, White House and hill staffers.
