1. How do the police know he's "emotionally disturbed?"
His protest was powerful.
He must have some help getting up on to that pole. No way could he have tied himself to the pole.

anyone who hangs currency around their neck is nuts. I mean, you can't be sane and be against our glorious leader's war, can you? It's un-Murkin, you know?

14. Oh, I don't know.
Something about the unkempt, wild-eyed man who's stripped naked, wrapped an American flag around his crotch, strung dollars around his neck, wrote all over himself, and tied himself up, and then resisted arrest might have given them a bit of a "disturbed" vibe. I'm sure that it's just that the cops are anti-American, though :eyes:

protests. He seemed to be more a heal-the-sick, comfort-the-poor, and render-unto-caesar-what-is-caesar's, god-what-is-god's type guy.

snickers at them, I think Jesus might pick a slightly less-ineffective means of bringing about change.

And, unlike this tool, I don't pretend that my not-protesting is going to have some effect on the world.

Then you misread my attempt at good advice.

As for your lack of pretense in admitting you prefer to sit on your butt, I can only applaud your honesty. It's becoming in someone who knows the limitations of inaction.

That's not to say I'm inactive. I'm just inactive when it comes to protesting, because protesting is inaction in and of itself. Unless you can point to some good protests have done since Vietnam ended and America stopped caring.

Speak TRUTH to POWER.

When you get on the board, at least the posts I've seen, all you seem to do is tear people down for what they do. You say they act like idiots etc...

I just think if you are so displeased by the things people do to stand up for their beliefs, you would better serve yourself and others to say what you believe IN and what you believe should BE done rather than jumping in on someone else's excitement and trashing it.

I'm not sure why your style gets to me but it does. Sorry if I was harsh.

like this guy did.

Gotta read the posts you reply to, LP, if you want to be taken seriously.

In these days, just like in the time of Christ, being "a heal-the-sick, comfort-the-poor, and render-unto-caesar-what-is-caesar's, god-what-is-god's type guy" could still get you crucified.

57. They wouldn't arrest Jesus for doing what he did.
There are absolutely no provisions in the US code that could even be interpreted as allowing for the arrest of a healer or teacher. The only way in which they could arrest Jesus would be for "disorderly conduct"--which would mean he would have to more or less pull stunts like this guy.

You see, I do read posts. I also think about what they imply. It's a useful skill. Really, try it sometime.

86. I'll can get back to you on this with verse and examples, but...
If the Jews could get the Romans to string Jesus up because he was supposedly proclaiming himself "King of the Jews" and hung out with militants who advocated the overthrow of the government (Judas - who turned him in BECAUSE Jesus wasn't militant enough) then it could happen here.

This isn't the America we've been taught about in school Lone Pawn.

There was a man who wound up in Guantanamo Bay for over 3 years, was tortured and denied access to a lawyer until people on the outside found out what was going on and screamed bloody murder, he may still be there.. but the kicker is - he was the wrong guy. He was the room mate of the man they were looking for and they still never kept him for at least 3 years.

Another man was catching a plane and got hustled off from customs to a plane that took him to Saudi Arabia where he was tortured for over a year and when they finally dropped him off at the Albanian border with nothing, his family had moved on thinking he was dead.

These people did nothing, but our government authorized their torture and detainment without any due process.

Jesus could get in trouble these days. Believe it.

95. I appreciate the support, but I feel unworthy.
Seriously, maybe this Lone Pawn simply feels that this display was disrespectful of Christ and hadn't heard about all the stuff that's been happening to people who have done no wrong.

Maybe my rant and such are counter productive. I hope not.

I am so impressed that this person got up and did such a brave thing, risked his 15 minutes of fame on a worthy statement of truth.

Then again, someone with that much courage deserves my support, but can probably handle the detractors just fine.

I've been trying to be a peaceful influence here, but sometimes I just get up in arms, you know?

97. Not everyone who supports Jesus is a repuke.
I totally love Jesus and I view what I learned about Christ, the real teachings, tell me He is a man of peace and healing.

We DEMs try to help those less fortunate and have a world that works for EVERYBODY to at least some degree and WE are APPAULED that *ush is waging this war in OUR Name.

I think about the Christ I know who quietly knocks at the door to one's heart and knows every little secret about us and loves us anyway - like a true friend. I believe HE loves EVERYONE, as the Son of God knows each name and face - including the Iraqis' and HIS grievious rage that this war, this killing is being done in HIS name must be nearly unbearable.

But that is just my personal faith. I have felt what I believe to be the love of Christ and it is AGAPE (Greek for Unconditional love that can heal everyone it touches) and I do NOT believe that the Christ I believe in would ever EVER allow the murder of innocent children in HIS name without some accounting some day and some how to those who blaspheme Him in such a manner.

It is a message of Love and Compassion to remind folks that God so loved the world that He gave his only son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins, NOT so we could go out and kill some more. It is a message to believers to search their hearts and really figure it out --- WWJD?

not *for* the USA's sins. The only problem I have with this is his doing it at an intersection, and the potential for accidents to occur from people paying more attention to him instead of the road. We Americans have enough trouble staying focused while driving without people doing odd things outside our car windows to add to our already persistent inattention.

40. While it is true most rational people are "disturbed" by the war...
To be disturbed enough to face the storm of opinion that would come of this either requires 12 pound balls or a spiritual manic dellusion.

He is 33, he's got a passing resemblence and if he thinks he IS Christ, that could be a problem.

Still in a world this crazy, even if he is making this statement in the middle of a manic episode, he is still speaking the truth to power and needs to be applauded.

After all, what (besides a country gone totally f***ing nuts in supporting an unjust war and ridiculing the peace makers) would cause someone to have such an episode anyway?

Whether he is fully sane and more courageous or in a full blown manic episode, this man is saying what all of us know is true, Christ did NOT authorize this war, contrary to popular opinion.

43. Helluva a lot more effective than "Trailer Hitch Jesus"
I think what he's done has taken a lot of courage. He knows people will mock him, but it was more important to get out the message.

Hmmm. Now, who else in history has done that? I wonder ...

49. I Hope This New Graphic Helps This Guy Spread His Message!!!
I just posted this new graphic to my site and sent it out to my ever growing e-mail distribution list with the following text:

"Check out this link for more shots of this one man protest in NYC. Great Action! http://nyc.indymedia.org/feature/display/149038

==========================================================

This came to my attention through a couple of posts at www.democraticunderground.com. Here is some of the text that was in one of the posts:

(from the Open Newswire): On Tuesday I came across an anti-war activist standing on traffic signal pole in Astor Place. A sign attached to the pole read, "WAR?" and on his chest was written "All American." The "ONE WAY" signs were changed to read, "NO WAR."

Apparently he stayed up there for almost two hours before the NYPD took him down.

===========================================================
He inspired the following graphic! Hope it helps him spread his message far and wide!

End This War!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to you and glaucon for bringing this great protest to my attention!!!!:applause:

51. Definitely a powerful message
However, I doubt its effectiveness. To the average American (ie NOT a DU'er), this guy will look insane. As a representative of the anti-war movement, I'm not sure that's what we should be going for. This will probably offend people of faith, who are often leery about the war in the first place (excluding fudies, of course).

53. Tit for Tat
People of supposed "faith" offend me - who gives a rat's ass about them. The whole group of the "faithful" at Justice Sunday offended the hell out of me and our Constitution. I applaud this man for his courage and conviction - if we all only had a drop of the courage this man had - we wouldn't have a sociopath running our country now.

I know that they're beyond hope. I'm talking about everyday believers, not necessarily hardcore churchites. Many people don't take kindy to their messiah being mocked.

55. I don't think he's mocking the messiah
but I do think he is immulating him - I mean really - WHO would Jesus bomb? Do you think Jesus would condone a war based on lies - the Irai's are his children too, not just us, as most Americans seem to believe. I think Jesus would be making a statement against the war too if he were here.

BTW - Welcome to DU :hi:

65. SERIOUSLY Folks ! Don't EVER try anything like this stunt ...
Maybe the guy is disturbed for doing this if he knows how dangerous this is -- but I doubt it.

Most people mistakenly believe that the Roman method of execution, crucifixion, killed through a slow tortuous process, such as blood loss. It didn't. The nails through the hands and feet were just an added torture.

Crucifixion killed just as effectively when the prisoner was merely tied to the cross.

The method killed by putting the victim's body in an odd position that made it impossible to breath. Crucifixion victims died by suffocation, not shock and blood loss.

A demonstrator like this might think he is safe because he did not use nails, etc, and just hung himself on the cross. He isn't.

I know this sounds like a dumb warning, but never tie yourself or anyone to a cross to make a graphic point or in a theatrical presentation without expert supervision. You could end up dead very quickly, without anyone nailing your hands or feet, or piercing your side with a Roman spear!

66. A picture like this...
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 12:06 PM by glaucon

A picture like this has the potential, and I emphasise potential, to influence a generation.

We all do what we can in life, depending on our abilities, our talents and our inclinations. Some protest a grotesque war by making a statement using symbols that are viceral to many Americans. Others whine and nitpick his actions; talents vary widely.

But one thing is certain: facile and ignorant claims he is an idiot only mimic the imperial voice donned by Bush and his minions. It is the same Nixonian voice that desparately tried to ridicule the protests of the '60's.

Thus we sidle, like a divided clan, into more American and innocent Iraqi deaths, having learned nothing.

89. "Man In The Tree"

"Man In The Tree"

The man in the tree is staring at me
All of the blood dripping down
He says: where are you bound?
Said: I'm going to town to pawn my crown
And never come back here again

My lady in waiting is weaving a robe
Of silk and moonlight and now
And she never asks how
So pleasant a task she never asks
And she only listens to friends

The man at the store he looks at my crown
Listens to my sad tale
He says it never fails
If the crown is for sale, I'll give you some nails
But you can only use them on friends

The man in the tree was staring at me
As I passed by again on that day
He said I'd got in his way
Said: nails aren't the way to be free to stay
So I traded them all for the end
Went back to my lady in waiting and all of her friends

99. "There Was A Man"

young girl at a Vietnam era peace rally.

There was a man came to our town
He wore a suit of red
He memorized with secret eyes
That he hid away in his head

He had a scar upon his head
Where there used to be a crown
But he sold his robes at the five and ten
And lived on the edge of town
That fall he showed us a magic leaf
That he could change to snow
He bought it partly with his grief
And partly with his soul
He scattered seeds in the alley way
He never seemed to rest
And when you went to ask him why
All he ever said was yes
He made a swan from waving grass
Beside a crystal shore
And a sunrise spun from broken glass
And many things wondrous more
But then his hands began to burn
When he heard the news from the war
When we cannot find each other he said
Then we can't run away any more
Next day with tears along his face
He passed us on the hill
No one thought to ask him to stay
And he knows that we never will
There was a man came to our town
He wore a suit of red
He memorized with secret eyes
That he hid away in his head

91.  RIDING UNTIL WE GET THERE, by Eric Wallach
Edited on Thu Apr-28-05 09:20 PM by glaucon
I think this is the same guy.

http://nyc.indymedia.org/newswire/display/118176/

waging peace in Manhattan

For eight days I rode my bike with a big PEACE sign on the back wearing an upside-down American flag as a cape. I must have clocked over a hundred miles during the convention randomly riding in circles around midtown confronting people, fellow protestors and the Republicans.

Most of the time when I made eye contact I held up my two-fingered peace sign and quietly waited for a response. When I got a positive sign back it felt as if we had made an agreement that we will both act to restore peace and will live peacefully now in order to see peace in the future.

The majority of the people did not respond or would cursed at me. My only wish is that they had to think about their negative response as they saw the word PEACE on the back of my bike. What do they want? War? Hopefully a seed of doubt was planted.

From time to time I sang my own Passover song, “Get Out of Egypt”. The lyrics include: “Bush lied, we cried. The news said he was right. The Constitution has died. So get out and shout tonight.” Sometimes I sang “Here Comes the Sun” with one word changed in the opening lyrics: “Little darling, it seems like years since PEACE has been here.”

Most of the younger cops nodded their support or raised their hands with a thumbs up or a peace sign themselves. Fortunately, no officers actually forced me to stop as long as I kept the flow and didn’t get in the way. My heart goes out to all those patriots who were arrested and their bikes confiscated.

The fluidity and freedom of my bike enabled me to be anywhere and everywhere during the demonstrations. I was able to join the Green Dragon’s Paul Revere ride announcing “The Republicans are coming!” and I was one of the 5,000 bikes in the Critical Mass ride. I walked my bike in the United for Peace and Justice march and rode all over the city during the August 31st day of direct actions.

I saw a live board game of American Oligopoly that had our present Big Business political landscape represented and the Bush crew playing the Kerry party. I also caught the Eyes Wide Open installation in Central Park with boots and shoes representing the troops and civilians killed in Iraq.

On the last night of the convention my bike ride rant boiled down to, “Hey delegates, news flash: Bush is lying to you!” One Republican man mouthed quietly to me that he knew Bush was lying, to which I said, “When you go in your voting booth you don’t have to vote for him.” Before popping into a cab he whispered, “I’m not.”

I’m writing this all down not for self-congratulation but in the hopes that this may inspire other bikers to devise their own signs and songs. Even though the convention is over, it is imperative that we continue our direct confrontation as often as possible. Let’s go to the tourist traps in the City and engage those Americans that need to reconsider their vote.

The work isn’t over when we have so far to go. Let’s divide and conquer.

Power to the peaceful.

Bush to troops in Qatar: 'Mission accomplished'

DOHA, Qatar (CNN) -- President Bush told U.S. troops in Qatar on Thursday that their duty and sacrifice had liberated the people of Iraq and helped in defeating global terrorism.

"Our actions sent along a clear message that our nation is strong and our nation is compassionate," Bush told the troops at the rally. "America sent you on a mission and that mission has been accomplished."

This photo is very moving to me. It has the timeless quality of that naked Vietnamese child running down the street after having been napalmed. It captures an emotion that is more like an undercurrent in today's American psyche. Just my two cents.

118. Message from Eric Wallach
Posted on SmirkingChimp:

To those who have read this article,

Thank you for your kind words and wishes

I'm sure I'll be able to deal with my legal issues. I've been charged with Disorderly conduct (a violation) and Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the second degree (a misdemeanor, piunishable up to a year in jail) - that's because I was standing in front of the street signs. All my lawyer friends say I have a good case.

The event went off very well. The image was clear and the message got out.

The cops and the "criminals" I met in The System were respectful and supportive.

The story got on a couple of news channels and published in a couple of newspapers.
(FYI: The Associated Press and New York Times were notified but would not come downtown for just one person's protest ...)

See my neighborhood paper's account: http://www.thevillager.com/villager_104/thepassionofastor.html

I hope as you do that those who want a future free of war will create their own actions. If one person takes a stab at the war racketeers everyday, we'll certainly slow them down, til one day, the machine will stop.

I believe as you do.
We'll get there one day.

Til peace shines on
I'll remain
ripe for the fight

Sincerely,

Eric

Forward please.

:)
