GOP leaders reach tentative deal on budget
By Mary Dalrymple, Associated Press Writer | April 28, 2005

WASHINGTON -- Top congressional Republicans reported agreement Thursday on a budget that envisions $10 billion in Medicaid reductions over the next five years and at least $70 billion in tax cuts.

The plan could also open the way to oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Congressional officials said the agreement envisions spending of about $2.6 trillion for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, with a deficit of $382 billion.

Republican officials said the plan relies on savings from farm, student loan and pension programs to achieve President Bush's goal of cutting deficits in half over five years.

House and Senate GOP leaders said they would push for a vote later in the day. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., expressed optimism that he had enough votes to pass the budget in the Senate.

2. All the hoopla swirling around the **press conference** tonight is
the perfect distraction for further robbery by the rethugs in Congress from Medicaid recipients, farmers, students, pension recipients and our arctic environment, in the form of this egregious budget bill. We all know how * HATES these conferences with those upstart journalists, but he's going to be the distraction tonight for all of this to happen.

This is classic sleight of hand. While everyone's eyes and ears are fastened on this ****press conference****, we are being robbed.

3. Exactly
So people will be focused on Bush and nobody will think about what they're doing. This is a very unusual thing for him. Especially during sweeps. So no wonder something like this is up.
