Some statistics about the UK you may not know
The wealthiest 1% of adults own nearly 1 quarter of the wealth.

Three quarters of those of working age are not in the labour market.

There are three abortions for every ten births.

More young black people go to prison than to a British University.

30% of Britain's children live in poverty and half of these live in single-parent families.

Half of the country's households have less than £1,500 in savings and half of them nothing.

Three in 10 people would be in poverty were it not for social benefits.

One quarter of new prisoners are under 21 years old.

The poorest quintile earns 1/40th of the income.

One in 5 11-15 years olds took drugs last year.

At every age group except 16-24 years olds, more people move from
urban to rural areas than vice-versa - and four times as many move
from towns to countryside than from the north of the country to the
south.

The NHS is the world's third largest employer after the chinese
army and the indian railways.

These stats are cherrypicked out of a large article in the Financial
times giving some pre-election stats.

1. One of those doesn't look right - it's the wrong way round
"Three quarters of those of working age are not in the labour market"

but: "The employment rate for people of working age was 75.0 per cent for the three months ending in February 2005, an increase from 74.8 per cent the previous quarter. The last time the rate was higher was for the three months ending in November 1975.

The number of people in employment increased by 148,000 over the quarter and by 231,000 over the year, to reach 28.64 million"

2. That is exactly as printed in the FT
Perhaps they got it backwards... or, perhaps there is incorporated
data from disability and other sources?

3. I think it must be three quarters employed
Just think of a typical household (apart from those which are just pensioners) - 2 people working is quite common, so is one person - but nobody working isn't that common. If 75% of people didn't, then you'd find far more households where no-one works. I'm sure disability couldn't make the difference.

4. As much as that's surely true "down south"
Its totally believable that 3/4th's don't work in some areas. Of course
that is absurd, that 3/4ths are surfing their couches, but rather in
less wealthy areas like east glasgow, i'd wager the vast majority do
not work.

If housewives, students and all that are included, it could well be
true. If the stat is wrong, the FT's reputation as a provider of
accurate information is severely embarassed!

The pink paper should be ashamed. For those not familiar, the
Financial Times is London's Wasll street journal.
