CNN shifts news focus
New boss stresses a more in-depth approach, akin to archrival Fox News.

Klein acknowledges that Nielsen ratings do not reflect what he considers upgraded news treatment.

While CNN has celebrated scattered head-to-head victories on given nights, it still trails Fox News substantially in the big picture. Since Klein's hiring, his rival has widened its lead.

"We're winning the quality war already, not the ratings war," he says. "About a year from now, we should be able to establish consistent ratings growth."

Klein maintains that his philosophy is easier to sell to a staff competing against white-hot Fox News. Resistance to change has been "far less" than he braced for.

"We've been getting our clocks cleaned the last few years by Fox," he says. "If we were No. 1, we'd be a lot more conservative in how we embrace ... the new modes of connecting to viewers.

"These are smart professionals here who are tired of being in second place. They want to be No. 1 in the hearts and minds of viewers — as well as in the Nielsen books."

First, he says, the makeover on relaying the news must be completed.

"It's not consistently where I want it to be. Probably 50 percent. On any given night, half of what we do is right on target, the other half is what we need to work on."

6. The night they had Ward Churchill is the day I dropped CNN
Right when it was all starting, they got the interview.

Paula Zahn just used her show as a pulpit to yell at him, repeat the same line over and over again, and never let him explain his side.

If you're going to outright bully an interviewee, I'm not watching.

I'd like information, not an agenda.

9. Headline News has already changed in evening to run hourlong garbage
I noticed a few weeks ago that you can't even tune in to CNN Headline News channel anymore in the evening and necessarily get news recaps since they have started showing hourlong fluff distraction programming like Nancy Grace.

21. Klein's logic is fucked up on its very face .......
He wants to improve ratings. Okay, that's his job.

The country (his audience pool) is pretty much evenly divided. One half is overserved with their favored flavor of news ..... the syncophantic screech monkeys who spew lies, bile, and hatred all day, every day. For them, Fox is the pinnacle of this flavor of news and CNN and MSNBC are the also rans, but vying for the same viewers.

The other half of the country is woefully underserved. This other half wants one of two things. "News" that squares with their own views (the left wing screech monkeys - and they *do* exist) or they want simple, honest, truthful news. Not fair and balanced. Just the fucking truth.

So along comes this boy wonder and says he's gonna remake CNN. Okay. But then he takes leave of any sense he might possess. He decides to compete for that half of the audience pool that's ALREADY FUCKING COMMITTED!

Were he really smart, and were he to really want ratings, would he not be better off going for that HALF OF THE FUCKING COUNTRY that gets NOTHING?????

This whole notion that he wants to improve CNN's ratings is utter bullshit. With so clear a path to better ratings, he instead chooses the path to increased syncophancy.

I have to ask why this is. I suspect the answer is that his masters want to keep the cabal propped up.

There's simply no other logical answer.

Is there?

22. He's stupid?
That's the only other reason I can think of.

BTW, great post. Half the country is desperate for real news (or news with a liberal slant,) so what does Klein do? He goes after Faux's audience!

There was a reason Farenheit 911 broke box-office records, but this idiot can't seem to put two plus two together.
