If Quebec can secede, then why can't the South?
(Disclaimer: This is in no way intended to offend any of the many fine Democratic/Liberal/Progressive southern people who just happen to be located in bright red areas!)

I was driving though Montreal on business a couple days ago, listening to talk radio on 800am on the dial. Several times it was brought up that if Quebec were to hold another referendum today, the vote would pass according to the latest polls. It's pretty much inevitable that Quebec will eventually secede and become its own country. And why shouldn't they?

If a province can hold such a referendum, then so should a state or group of states be able to do the same in this country. Afterall, it is a free world, isn't it?

The biggest mistake this country ever made was preventing the South from seceding in the 1800's and numerous times thereafter.

The next time the South wants to secede, which will be soon after the Democrats regain power, I think we should open the door and guide them the hell out. Then they can just go about their merry, intolerant, rednecked inbred ways, jamming their self-righteous religions down each others throats, and leave the rest of us the fuck alone. Take the entire family of fundamentalist Bush assholes with them.

Nothing would make me happier than to see the South get their historically longtime wish and become their own country. Just for starters, even seeing Texas become a separate country would be a sheer pleasure. It would be so much fun sitting back and watching the former Lone Star state become a third world country within a matter of months.

Not only would the flow of illegal aliens across the border come to a screeching halt in most Southern parts, but the flow would inevitably reverse as well. The only illegal aliens would be Texans sneaking into Mexico.

Here's to future secession, one way or the other!

1. They'd have nukes and a part of our military.
There'd be no way they'd secede without those.

16. Q: Why am I not surprised at this post?
A: Ralph Nader supporters, seceders from the Democratic Party, blind go-lefters, Mike Malloy fans, troops-out-now bleaters, etc...

17. My, what sweeping generalizations.
I don't like Ralph Nader, I don't think the Democratic party should split up, I don't listen to Mike Malloy, and I don't think we should retreat from Iraq.

I do think Democrats should stop assimilating though. So at least your one for five.

5. Not necessarily true. They'd secede soley to have their own abortion laws.
And give them some states with just enough desert to race their cars and they'll be more than satisfied!

3. It's been tried.
Besides, they are in power now and if they get the courts, then I guess the first time was just a battle and this time, they win without firing a shot (I'm in a southern state by the way).

4. Yeah
As much as I like Lincoln, I never really understood why it was so important to him to keep the Union together.

6. Exactly. In retrospect, maybe this was Lincoln's biggest mistake....
preserving the Union when he should've just let the South go!

Anyway, there's still hope, and we've now learned from our previous mistakes.

21. I have always wondered why Harry Truman said
that if the south have won, Russia would now own Alaska. I guess I just don't understand the history behind that statement.

9. Oh but they will. Just wait and see
This period of time we're sitting in right now if probably the ONLY time they haven't wanted to secede. They'll be at it again at the first sign of changing of the tides, and next time we should honor their request.

11. I doubt it..
Different circumstances...the country is much more stable and incredibly homogenous despite the red/blue state thing...most of the country is purple.

Like I said, pure flamebait, guaranteed to piss off any number of good, loyal Democrats here, despite your disclaimer, and a rehash of about a thousand other threads besides.

I'd vote for my nice, civilized, blue state to secede, with or without nukes.

19. Me too. That's why I think referendums should be possible in this country
whether it's blue states voting to leave the reds or vice versa.

If Quebec is going to do it, then so should we be able to, given the current state of affairs. It only makes sense.
