Fundies would FREAK at new Disney statistic
So there is a HUUUGE multi-page article on teh future of Walt Disney World, impact on economy,new attractions, etc etc. And one section to diversity says that Disney's gay work force could reach as high as ...

FORTY PERCENT!! This year!!! whoo hooo!

I think it's because Disney sponsors a GLBT day at their theme parks - at least, that's what I think set the fundies off at the beginning.

I tend to doubt the 40% statistic. It sounds like fundie propaganda to stir up the "believers". I'm not sure it would even be legal for Disney as an employer to obtain that information.

I'd hazard a guess that at least 40% of their male employees are gay. Some occupations are more gay friendly than others, like medicine and showbiz. Although statements like "all hairdressers are gay" and "all gay guys want to go into the movies" are stereotypical and wrong, the statistics point to some professions gay folks just tend to gravitate towards and which are hospitable towards them.

You can't get much showbizzier than the Magic Kingdom.

30. Don't forget there is a large administrative team that backs the product
you see 'on stage'. Not everyone at Disney is an actor or entertainer. Ride Ops, Maintenance, Landscaping, Warehouse, Admissions, Security, Food service, Merchandise, etc...these are just some of the different departments you will find at any theme park. (not just disney) I know for a fact that the gay population at Disney is spread out, not just the showbiz types. (just an fyi from someone whose been there)

from what I remember, Disney gives benefits to partners, not just spouses. :-) I think that's more the reason they have such a great stat. They are gay friendly from what I have heard! :-)

8. Well, I'm freaked about the upcoming Disney movie "Valiant."
It's about military carrier pigeons and makes war look like a fun cartoon. I don't care if Disney's workers are gay or straight--it makes me sick to see war glorified for children.

I dont think Disney flat out said so. But it was the consensus of some gay Cast Members that it is or could reach 40% and they printed it, PROUDLY, i might add. Also, VALIANT!?? That THING is NOT a Disney movie!! Some UK studio made it and Disney is merely distributing it. Word NOT very good on it.

35. We were last in Orlando Disneyworld in 1997 when the kids were 6 & 3
The place was packed with Bible belters in all kids of Jesus T- Shirts. It was bizarro world.

In 2001, we headed out to the west coast when the kids were 10 and 7 and went to Disneyland, LegoLand, Sea World, The San Diego Zoo, etc.

I know Orange County is pretty right wing, but we didn't see any of the religious t shirts and gear we saw in Florida. Different crowd entirely.


Anyway we're boycotting Florida till Jeb is gone (and hopefully not to the White House) so we don't have to deal with that shit anyway. (And the kids are bigger now and prefer other vacations anyway)

1997 was the year the Southern Baptists voted to boycott Disney. Strange that the parks should have been full of Bible thumpers.

In my many visits, I've found that the Disney parks are often filled with one group or another--gays, cheerleaders, shriners, auto-parts salesmen. All it takes is one major convention of something to make you feel overrun by that particular group.
