U.S. searches for pilots of two missing jets

Navy officials told CNN they believe the jets collided with each other in bad weather during the routine mission.

The crew of the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson lost contact with the planes about 10:10 p.m. (2:10 p.m. ET), a U.S. military statement said.

2. Not to state the obvious, but I don't see how the "insurgents" could do it
You can't take out a jet with a shoulder-launched rocket or RPG.

Iran? :scared:

7. Who Says That's The Only Armaments they Could Use or Have Access to?
You know what's in their arsenal? There are things that can take down jets, especially if the pilots are unprepared because you're not supposed to have them.

8. FYI: they can bring down low-flying jets
Past history and ongoing military alliances show that China and Pakistan have not avoided supplying weapons to Islamic radicals. From 1979 to the Soviet defeat in 1989, Pakistan smuggled Chinese and other weapons into Afghanistan, and gave them to seven Afghan Islamist parties and to thousands of fighters from across the Islamic world. The bulk of the weapons were Kalashnikov rifles purchased from China, Egypt, and a host of Eastern-bloc countries. But the most important weapons in turning the tide of the war were Chinese- and American-made shoulder-fired rockets, which allowed Afghan guerrillas to shoot down Soviet helicopters and low-flying jets.

9. My thoughts, as well.
I suspect that the Iraqis are getting some help on the ground. My guess is that it's Russian technicians who are bringing in equipment like infra-red seeking devices, or heat-seeking technology. Or possibly Iranians who are assisting. Saudis?

After all, we did it to the Russians in Afghanistan.

It's a quantum leap from taking down helicopters (we've seen a lot this lately), versus targeting F-18's.

If it's true that these F-18's were taken down deliberately, then in my opinion we have moved into a new phase of this war. A phase that can't be won, by the way.

We'll simply hemorrhage to death financially.

Incoming cloud forces Bush into safe bunker

Julian Borger in Washington
Friday April 29, 2005
The Guardian

President George Bush was bundled into an underground bunker, Dick Cheney was evacuated to an "undisclosed location" and heavily armed secret servicemen took up defensive positions when a fast-moving cloud scudded towards the White House, it was reported yesterday.
