Lets play a little game right now: EVERYONE TURN OFF YOUR TV
This is a game where everyone can win. Seriously. Just TURN OFF YOUR TV. Stop complaining about the damn thing and how they aren't reporting the news that is important to us (you're right, they aren't and they won't). If you have to have it on, ok, put in a DVD or something. Personally I'm listening to music on my stereo as I read and type here at DU. You can do what ever you want.

Now, post how you feel below.

POWERFUL, isn't it!

:)

YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR MEDIA INPUT.

YOU CAN CONTROL WHERE YOU PLACE YOUR ATTENTION.

And doing so is empowering. The emperor's slight of hand can't work if YOU have control of your attention.

By the way, thanks for playing!

:hi:

9. OK, by me.
I'm not trying to dictate what people OUGHT to do so much as point out that we CAN control our media input. I stopped watching TV after the 2000 election. I don't even watch it for entertainment. I HATE commercials and the so called "news" is even worse. It's just junk food for the brain.

I can and do live without it.

Now if I could only get a handle on my other intake habits ;)

12. Well, I grew up on a farm and I don't find cow or bull paties
all that interesting. I can understand the fun in watching how they try to manipulate us in to BUYING THEIR CORPORATE REALITY but, personally, I just got fed up with it all.

No more for me. EVER.

And I'm quite happy about that! :)

10. I've tried to get my husband to go along with that. We have Direct TV
via satellite and it costs us $102.00 a month. We have everything they offer.

I told him we would get a lot of things done around the house.

I think the above comment is what scared him. He thought he actually might have to remove his butt from his recliner.

6. Thank you, John Prine....
She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal

Well, she pressed her chest against me
About the time the jukebox broke
She give me a peck on the back of the neck
And these are the words she spoke

Blow Up Your TV, throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home

Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try and find Jesus on your own

I sat there at the table and I acted real naive
Cause I knew that topless lady, she had something up her sleeve
She danced around the room awhile and she did the hoochy cooch
Yea sing a song all night long tellin' me what to do

Blow Up Your TV, throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home

Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try and find Jesus on your own

But I was young and hungry and about to leave that place
Just as I was going she looked me in the face

I said "You must know the answer"
She said "No, but I'll give it a try"
And to this day we've been livin' our way
Here is the reason why

We blew up the TV, threw away the paper
Went to the country, built us a home

Had a lotta children, fed 'em on peaches
They all found Jesus on their own

Although I haven't found Jesus yet, though.

Or, maybe I have--it just doesn't look like anybody else's kind of Jesus.

11. Been doing this for years
I control what is on my TV. Whether it is by only viewing shows I specifically decide to at the time I specifically decide to. Or using it as a medium to view programming from around the world rather than limiting myself the content my local broadcasters or cable wish me to view.

The net provides the resources one needs to create whatever function you wish your TV to serve. It takes the control away from the corporations.

It is called video feedback looping.

FINALLY something to make TV worth watching!

21. I couldn't agree more. You could remove the ON button.
I use my TV as a plant stand. Actually, it still works and I could turn it on if anything real dramatic ever happened (like another 9/11) and I wanted to get some images. But for now it just sits there with the plants covering it up.

Quite funny, actually. Most people don't even notice it is there.

Edited on Mon May-02-05 10:25 PM by LibInTexas
(with no HD programming at this time, maybe Voom someday.)

I work in the video world, and use it as a monitor sometimes when I'm dubbing.

Otherwise, mostly movies. Every once in awhile I'll tune a local news program to see why I don't miss working for those vampires anymore.

He's learning how to us it currently shooting lots of footage of PRO-CAR (Porche) racing. Just produced visuals for a 50 inch plasma screen for one of the racing companies. and has edited a video to play on a Sony PSP.

Almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about, hugh?

Create your own media reality anyone?

andy weil, in his book '8 weeks to optimum health,' recommends taking a 7-day 'news fast.' he says to notice how you feel when you're not being inundated with the negativity of the news. he doesn't say to never watch the news again, but just to notice how it affects you.

45. I do understand that.

I have gone through phases where I have given up television completely, and I don’t “miss” it in the sense that there is plenty else to occupy my needs for entertainment, etc. during those times. But it is completely possible to use the TV instead of letting the TV take over…. My kids only have one show they enjoy, and I only watch the West Wing on Bravo on Monday nights and the Daily Show on Comedy Central. I haven’t watched “news” in years, nor have I watched most of the shit they put out nowadays. I keep it for the couple of shows I like don’t apologize for keeping it.

Remember, too…. It can be a force for good. Ever see Free Speech TV?
