Remember those "patriotic" bumper stickers that popped up after 9/11?
"United we stand" (that one was pure propaganda)
"The power of pride"
"God bless America"

Does anyone know who made those and distributed them?

I'm interested if it was it a GOP-connected operation.

6. Does Lowe's Have Republican Ties?
I'm really curious who was so interested in whipping up (artificial) patriotism with the stickers-- and there were even billboards with these slogans too.

I did a google search on this and couldn't find anything but at the time they came out I remember there were stories about who was behind it.

12. I'm not sure if Lowe's has repub ties - I wouldn't doubt it
I can't stand Home Depot so we shop at Lowe's a lot. The whole "Power of Pride" was just vague enough to not offend anyone.

35. I would like to love this one, "Power of Pride"
But for the USA I'm just afraid it means being proudly ignorant and hubristic.

If hubristic isn't a word it should be.

2. Don't know who made them, but
I've seen a few stickers in Portland that answer the "God Bless America" one. They say: "God Bless the Whole World, No Exceptions" and similar sentiments.

3. the weird and revealing thing
about that whole post 9/11 period of "proud" T shirts and bumper stickers, was how we thought our response was so uniquely American. Actually, any village, hamlet, town anywhere in the world, in any desert, jungle or mountain valley, will come together and help dig each other out after a disaster, be it a bombing, earthquake,or flood. They just don't compose country songs about it, or buy T shirts with jingoistic slogans proclaiming how wonderful they are for doing what humans do naturally. We seemed convinced only Americans do this, and it kind of exposed how xenophobic, and dumb we really are.

5. A service manager once handed me one of those 'power of pride'
stickers when I picked my car up. I didn't put it on my bumper for a few reasons: I didn't feel any need to take part in the post-9/11 rah-rah; I associated them too closely with those craptastic window flags; and the phrase doesn't really mean anything to me.

I guess I'm just not a very good merrukin.

Hello! Doesn't the bible say that a proud look is one of the things God finds hateful?

People need to get their dogma straight.

Americans giving ourselves permission to kill people, and none too discriminately.

I found it quite chilling.

11. We still have several full-page newspaper patriotic pieces of crap
hanging in the hallway where I work. I am seriously considering taking them down. Besides being stupid, they're yellowed and really unattractive.

A lot of people here already know I'm a witch, they might as well find out by their criteria I must hate Amurika.

23. I remember that stuff
My local grocery store, in uber-liberal San Francisco, trotted out "These Colors Don't Run" t-shirts with the American flag and had racks of them by the checkout stand (it was a Bell Market - I think it's owned by Republicans).

I never saw anyone buying one. They kept them there for probably a year. I viewed it more a tacky exploitation, a way to make money from a tragedy, then political indoctrination but I could be wrong.

money, but the signs and stickers that appeared early on always struck me as suspicious.

31. you know...
In the days after 9/11, I was tempted to buy one of the "These Colors Don't Run" t-shirts and stencil beneath the flag, "But Our President Does" and draw a map of his AF One adventures that day. I just would have felt stupid buying the shirt.

24. Then of course there were those ubiquitous American flags on cars
which I never got got the idea of. It seems redundant to hang the flag in the US as support of the US, since 99.99% of Americans support the US-- the message almost seems to be that people who don't have flags are un-American or maybe that they are terrorists....

But I always thought the putting out the flag after 9/11 was some sort of more patriotic-than-though act which put me off.

29. The only thing amusing about that...
since they were poor quality pieces of plastic(crap), after a few months of neglect, seen it around here often enough, Old Glory turned into a surrender flag through fading, that is definately symbolic.

No, but they sure as shit FADE...

"These C l r don't "
With blue stripes underneath.

What kind of "patriot" puts a tough-sounding sticker on his beater then forgets about it?

Flag stickers with all but the Blue faded get my goat, too.

30. I think it's safe to say that in the days soon following 9/11
liberals and conservatives alike shared a common saddness in the events and a common pride about who we are.

The people who ruined this mutual feeling of unity and pride were Bush and Cheney. With the country on the verge of being more united than ever, they did their best to divide us.

If anything, I'd be more interested in finding out who made and distributed all the "patriotic" magetic ribbons you see on vehicles, the ones that were mass-produced after the Iraq War became such a black eye for this country. You can be sure that those are GOP-connected.

Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore

While digesting Reader's Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag, with gum on the back,
Fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I'd tell her how good I feel.

Chorus:
But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
They're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.

http://www.jpshrine.org/lyrics/songs/jpflagdecal.html

And then I thought about Sam Stone next...

Edit}And how about all the little flags on the GOPer's collars and the fact that they all had other more important shit to do, when Vietnam was going on!
