Terminally Ill 6-Month-Old On Life Support Dies
HOUSTON -- A terminally ill 6-month-old baby, who a Houston hospital wanted to remove from life support, died Wednesday morning, Local 2 reported.

Officials with Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital released the following statement Wednesday morning:

"The staff of Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital, particularly those who have cared for Knya, are saddened at her death from leukemia at 5:40 a.m. today. Knya's struggle with cancer began when she was just five weeks old. In the months that followed, she received ongoing treatment for both the leukemia and a related life-threatening bacterial infection. Her family was with her at the time of her death and full medical treatment was being provided. Our hearts go out to Knya's family in their time of grief."

2. The Texas "Futile Care Law" that the hospital attempted to enact, signed
by bush in 1999, is far, far more interesting.

http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/docs/HS/content/htm/hs.002.00.000166.00.htm

It boils down to the law which allows hospitals to pull the plug on anyone who can't pay the bill, and whom they judge to be terminal.

Administrators deciding who lives and dies by how much they can afford.

Life under a bush.

7. The main thing wrong with that bill is that it's restricted to the poor.
Every doc and nurse who has seen old people having their deaths prolonged in intensive care units on life support has wished there were a mechanism by which family members with false hope and unreasonable expectations could be overruled and the old person allowed to die in as much comfort as we could provide.

That won't happen for the old folks, of course, since Medicare is picking up the tab and they don't fall into the "indigent" category.

Disconnecting life support under this bill is not decided by bloodless administrators in three piece suits. It's decided by a team of doctors and an ethics panel which includes clergy.

Although giving up on sick infants seems heartless (they haven't had a chance to live, blah blah blah), in most cases the decision is the same one regarding prolonging death rather than enhancing the prospect for life.

The only shame in this law is its restriction to the poor.

15. Exactly
It's shameful and truly disgusting. It makes the republicans out to be the hypocrites they are. They are only pro-fetus. Other wise they could give a damn about the living. These people are disgusting human beings.

3. Poor little baby
So the hospital is "saddened" by her death yet they were about to pull the plug because the family couldn't pay for continued care? Fucking hypocrits.

13. Last week
the hospital stated it wanted to discontinue care because the child was suffering from pain (caused by flesh-eating bacteria) that even morphine could not dull. They said there was no hope and the child was dying a horrible death.

6. Snuffing abortion doctors?
Seriously, this was another poor, ethnic child. As such, her life and subsequent struggles didn't rank high on the news channels. Therefore, it also didn't rank high on the pro-lifer's agenda.

8. Where was DeLay and the Chimp and Frist? Why didn't they pass
emergency legislation to save this poor child?

More evidence that these fuckers are not pro-life

They're PRO-BIRTH...they don't give a shit about that life once it enters the world.

9. We'll since no one has yet posted what I'm thinking,
I guess maybe it's too inappropriately cynical to put up online.

I feel so terrible for that family and their late child.

Was commented upon in CornField's post above. It's also what pretty much anyone with half a brain is thinking.

19. Actually, it still hasn't been addressed in this thread.
So, I'm thinking that it's still too inappropriate for anyone--save the parents of the child or any other individual who was there to witness what happened--to state.

And I still feel terrible for that child and her family.

10. The staff was saddened?
The management was no doubt relieved. And the culture-of-lifers' silence speaks volumes.

What a pity that this happened before Santorum could arrive to raise money.
