Why is Hastert presiding over the House this morning?
House went into session at 10AM with Hastert presiding. Something is up. Could some trickery be in order to ram the $82B supplemental (with real ID imbedded) be involved?

1. It's his job. He's Speaker.

2. Um.....when is the last time you actually saw him presiding?
Please don't be trite. He creeps out of his office only when something is afoot. 99% of the time he designates a surrogate.

I was being facetious. Not at all the same thing.

5. I Think He Almost Always Presides. . .
. . .after a few days off. Then, he hands the gavel off in a few days. I know him personally (met him through a golf acquaintance) so i sure know him when i see him. I don't even have to be watching CSPAN, merely listening and know when he's there!

I think this happens pretty regularly actually. Not every day of every session, but a decent percentage of the time.

6. Maybe I was watching a long stretch when he was not opening the House
So I got the impression he only came out of the woodwork for SOTU and other joint sessions.

Sorry.

7. No Apology Needed
He ISN'T always presiding, so it would be easy to conclude when you concluded!

He's actually a fairly serious guy who doesn't strike me as ideologically driven as he appears in quotes. He is very likeable, personally. I am more than a little surprised that he has this high ranking position with the nutjobs. More interested in his own career than sticking to his own beliefs, i guess. (Which is an indictment unto itself, methinks.)
