California's Shepherds: Hard Life
In interviews conducted with 22 herders scattered throughout five counties, the group found that 91 percent had no toilet, 67 percent had no shower and 64 percent had no heat. Nearly 70 percent had no access to a cell phone or radio for emergency medical communication.

Because it's hard to calculate how long herders work, they are exempt from federal minimum wage laws. In Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona, the pay is about $650 a month, a little more than half the mandated minimum in California.

1. i know a california shepherd
who worked five years for a wealthy family. he was given permission to build a shelter for himself which he did. he then applied for squatter's rights, for he had indeed improved the property he "dwelled" upon.
it is five years later and he is happily residing on his own parcel.
