What is the difference between "back-owned" and "English-speaking?"
Since the gardener in that huge thread was in Northern VA, I think this question is relevant. DC has a lot of businesses that advertise themselves as "Black-owned." Is this some sort of racism too?
1. I might be more inclined to throw my business to a GLBT/friendly
owned business that advertises that way* if their services seemed comparable to other services. Is this similar to racism? I don't think so. It's supporting diversity from within the community.
I also choose local business whenever possible as opposed to huge chains that just happen to locate franchises in my town.
IMO that's what it's about if someone advertises as "black-owned."
* At least once, to be sure they were indeed either gay-owned or gay-friendly.
I'm not likely to patronize a business that uses Jesus Christ as a business come on, but I'm sure it works for a certain demographic. But folks who choose that approach must understand it may repel as well as attract customers. It's just another way of distinguishing one's business from another's.
I went there on the recommendation of a friend and didn't realize that they were all Jesusy until I got there. But he's a great dentist so I have stuck it out. The days they play hymns over the Muzak system are a little rough.
