DU MEDIA ACTIVISTS: I'm gonna need your help in a bit
PDA is getting ready to rock a detailed press release on the Blair/Bush memo and the Conyers letter demanding an investigation. We are going to blast it to every media outlet we can, but unfortunately it is Friday, i.e. 'take out the trash day,' and it may get lost.

Can you:

1. Blast the press release when I post it to every news outlet you've ever heard of, and;

2. Do it again on Monday?

Many thanks. I will post it when it is ready. It's good stuff, we are dropping the hammer.

5. GREAT NEWS....but why not wait until Monday....this is "dump day" and
Edited on Fri May-06-05 03:33 PM by KoKo01
it will be considered stale if everyone starts e-blasting today. It's jumping the gun. Besides, Conyers is still collecting signatures for the letter and we should give him over the weekend.

Also people have already been sending this around all week! Why do the PDA now?

6. Quick word of advice from a guy in a news room
Actually, doing it now is fine. It's just about the last possible second to make it in for Sunday, though.
Getting it in anytime over the weekend is fine for the altweekelies, nearly all of which have their copy meetings on Mondays.
And we all know you shouldn't even bother with broadcast. They are, after all, robots controlled by Karl Rove in an undisclosed location.

11. MEDIA BLASTER courtesy of jmac (formatted for e-mail)
Maybe people should divvy up the labor? Divide the list into groups of 20-50?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

Courtesy of jmac :toast:

To use these, just put one address in the 'to' box and copy/paste the rest in either the 'cc' or 'bcc'. I would suggest using the 'bcc' box so they don't see its a mass email. I'll try to add a list using ; separators later.

<bitchkitty says: Don't paste the entire list into your email client - many ISPs look for huge BCC content and will mark it spam. Do 10-20 at a time. Even then, many ISPs will mark it spam.>

13. I would suggest
that besides our sending it to the media outlets, we target a few individual sources. A while back, we conducted a small experiment here on GD: we contacted an editor from the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, requesting he run a story about Rep. Maurice Hinchey's comments on Karl Rove. The following Sunday, he ran a fantastic editorial.

We can work at several levels. The important thing is to open the door. Once we do, and a few newspapers carry the story, it makes it far more likelt all the papers will.

Do others agree?

(If so, I would like to start with David Rossie from the Binghamton paper.)

15. There have been
a few threads on DU that have caught my attention; some about people feeling powerless, and others that detail some of the differences between segments in DU. This gives us a unique opportunity to come together like we have not done since early November.

19. You are always
a voice of reason on DU. Now we have a reason to use our collective DU voice. This is a very real opportunity.

I'm an old man. One thing I've learned about opportunity is that each one only comes our way one time. You take advantage of it, or it slips away. Another may come by later, that looks similar, or even smells the same. But it's not.

Let's use this opportunity to our best advantage.

17. I couldn't disagree more
First, it's not DU's and DUers' jobs to make PDA effective, or do Will Pitt's job for him. He used to ask DU to do his research for him, now he's asking them to send out the emails for his press releases? Sounds like a definite demotion for the DUer troop worker bees.

In any case, that's not empowering, that's being used.

That said, YOUR idea has merit.

But why is it the Will the whatever-his-title-at-PDA-is doesn't have or can't develop his own media contacts? Or USE them if he has some?

You know, having seen Bev Harris do her thing using DU and DUers as a really rich free resource, only to have many of those who did all that unpaid work for her not just treated badly but slandered (or is it libeled? never can remember which applies to the written word) -- and that doesn't even TOUCH what she did to Andy Stephenson -- I'm a little sensitive about people "using" the free talent and good will of DUers.

And yes, this is a worthy cause. Let's just try to ensure that it doesn't become ROUTINE that we have worthy PDA causes that need DUers' "help," eh?

18. I think that it
is important to work at getting the truth out to the public. This can include using information from the PDA when it is of high quality. I likewise believe -- strongly -- that we should be using quality information from as many sources as we can. I agree 100% that we must be careful to not become associated with any one democratic faction. At the same time, I do not think we should exclude any resource that helps us reach our goals.

You mention the good research which is so often done by some DUers. If I were to rely on any one source of information for a informal group of DUers to rely upon, I think that the DUers would be it.

In the case of the information at hand, I think that it should be something we all can agree is important to get out. Our primary goal has to be getting the public to see that the administration lied from day one. We need to oppose the war at every opportunity, in my opinion.

24. Because there's POWER IN NUMBERS and we want change.
Edited on Fri May-06-05 08:54 PM by cyberpj
I understand your thoughts but the choice to help a plea is always an individual one whether it's researching, contributing to a medical costs fund, or communicating information and opinion where it helps.

I have responded to requests from many DUers to answer polls, check on facts or email contacts if I was aligned with the cause and had the time to do so. Because such a request might come from Will Pitt has less to do with my decision to help than how I feel about the importance of the cause.

There is always the chance one can be used or abused but that's life. I don't feel you can let that stop you from volunteering to help others with a cause already close to your own heart. I am quite aligned with PDA choices and philosphy so far and have yet to feel burned or used by Will Pitt so I'll help when I'm needed - without worry over recognition of my part in the plan.

This is a really important time and it feels important to keep banding together and using our strength in numbers however it will help. Will Pitt developing and using his own contacts will be wonderful -- but thousands of like minded voices supporting the same cause have a power that no single voice can achieve, no matter whose voice it is.

Focus, focus, focus on the goal.

28. I think,...it's about uniting,...
,...period. Set aside your extraneous concerns with extraneous stuff. It's all about us, humanity, joining together.

It's going to take all of us, together, humanity,...to remove our greatest obstacle: a neo-imperialistic, oppressive regime controlling a country with the most powerful (and dying) resources.

Together. We can do this, together.

29. the point is to make it not just from one lone source -- if the press

44. And I couldn't disagree more
with your post. It was my impression that most of us here were fighting toward the same goals. Perhaps you have a personal problem with the OP or something, I don't know.

We ARE the media. This thing is huge. It needs to be out there, anywhere and everywhere it can be. It's not like it's splashed all over the corporate media, like it should be. It won't be, either, unless they can no longer ignore it. You seem to be questioning the integrity of the op more than anything else, and I just don't get it. If Will Pitt or anyone else on DU has a voice, and I can be of help, I WANT to be. WHY would someone try to dissuade people from getting an impeachable offense publicized?

22. I like the way you think
I had been thinking about posting a thread in GD entitled something like, "This is exhausting. Can we do this in shifts?"

Because I've noticed that a lot of other people seem burnt out too, with good reason. And targeting is often more effective, as can be seen in marketing.

But then I thought, well, we really need as many people as we can get on every single one of these issues, because of the way this administration is. All the issues are so big and they're coming so fast and furious.

It's hard to know the right way to approach this. But I think your suggestion is definitely worth trying.

35. Sending Press Releases To the Media - How Does It Work?
One of my friends said it works by spending a lot of money. He talked about a service where you spend a bunch of money and it gets sent out to every media outlet there is. I don't really know all that much about how the media gets their news. Is it really about who has the most money like my friend is saying?

The media may grow through immoral profitteering corporacrats,...but it's still vulnerable (as are the corporacrats) to a united shift imposed by "the people" (of course, we are only "consumers" or gadgets in their world).

If you had the resources to make your way onto this discussion board, you certainly have the resources to spread press releases.
