Scary thought on national ID
Can the ID be used to punish dissenters? Can they tag the holder as an undesirable, or delete the info from the main database just to make them appear to be an illegal?

I know that national ID's were used in many dictatorships to isolate opponents.

I can see you not being able to use your credit cards, get a mortgage, or vote without a valid national ID?

3. According to one article, it can be used to punish dissent...
...I posted it yesterday, it was a comment by Rep. Ron Paul out of Texas. As I understand what he said, it was that the Director of Homeland Security (the new Gestapo chief, apparently) can determine exclusively and without telling anyone, what types of information about you is connected with your universal ID number.

There will be a national database, like NCIC, I'm sure, that will keep track of your criminal arrest and conviction history, your driving record, your citizenship, possibly some health information (like if you are diabetic), whether you are a donor and ...

...whatever else Herr Director decides the government should know about you. Like if you have a gun. Or if you're a registered Democrat. Or if you are on a no fly list. Or if you should be based on what books you checked out at the library.

It's really up to him.

Good thing he works for the government, huh? The government would never do anything bad to you, as long as you are a good citizen, right?

So be good. Citizen.

6. there's a big difference between violent criminals and
political dissenters. I have no complaint with legitimate, legal police work.

8. You think ID controls criminals?
Long time criminal defense attorney here. It doesn't, plain and simple.

You want crime control? There's only two solutions. 1. prison.
2. education and opportunity.

That's it. Nothing else works.

By the way, we've got more people in prison in this country, both as a percentage of our population and just in terms of gross numbers, than any other country on earth. That includes China, Russia, South Africa... you name it.

Every country. We're number one.

Do you feel safer?

7. I think he's taken the position that he does, but I don't think ...
... the courts have answered that one yet. Odd question, though. If the prez takes away my citizenship and I don't have dual citizenship, am I a "man without a country"?

I mean he's gone apeshit medieval on everything else, I suppose exile and banishment should surprise no one.

11. A while back....
a US Senator who opposed the "official" government line was arrested for his opposition to a war that he felt was unjust, tried by a military tribunal, stripped of his citizenship, and deported.

It can STILL happen here, folks...
