Did Keith Olbermann really say this?
" Shallow, phony patriotism will always draw a crowd, like dogs humping in the street."
-- MSNBC's Keith Olbermann (reacting to the ratings showing that FOX News Channel was the most watched cable news outlet covering memorial events for Ronald Reagan)

NO WONDER I LOVE HIM!!!!

4. It's not unusual...
for Keith to go after FOX.

He analyzed FOX's ratings on his blog about a month ago.

He's one of the few journalists who isn't afraid to tell it like it is without being afraid of being accused of being biased.

He hates O'Riley. :) Makes fun of him all the time.

One good thing about MSNBC is that they call Scarborough conservative commentary, but they never succomed to the temptation (and pressure, I'm sure) to call Olbermann liberal commentary. They just call it news. As it should be.

You can always count on Olbermann. I write him and tell him so sometimes. :)

8. Olberman ... what the future of news could look like on a liberal network
Hip, edgy, entertaining .... and always truthful ... but with a liberal slant. Imagine if he were in a place that had a large number of viewers.

Is Rather's old job still up for grabs?

14. Yeah, except...
I don't think he really has a liberal slant. I just think he's perceived that way by the right because he says things that should be obvious to all but that most journalists would shy away from anyway for fear of getting the label.

I recently heard Chris Matthews say that "a fact doesn't need an opposing viewpoint" which I have thought for a long time. I was surprised to see Chris say that since he doesn't practise it. Keith does.

I think we like Keith because he says what we're thinking.

You don't think he has a liberal slant??? = :o =

That's the reason he was FIRED from Fox!!! Did you see the film "Outfoxed"?

The Keith Olbermann you see, is the REAL deal! :headbang:

18. I actually don't...
Edited on Sat May-07-05 01:52 PM by ThumperDumper
I just think most people have gotten used to what it looks like when the media tries SO HARD to AVOID looking like they have a liberal slant. I don't think Keith has an agenda. I just think he's not afraid reporting things that irritate rightwingers without tiptoeing around it.

I'm willing to bet he'd do the same when reporting news that's embarrasing to the left.

Fox would fire someone in the center who was completely objective for being "biased", so that's not a good judge for me. I have seen Outfoxed, but it's been a few months.

34. Oh, I've heard him on Al Franken's radio show,
making grrreat sport of Bill O'Lielly...much more openly than he would even dare do on his own show. Leans a bit to the left? Yaaaa, I'd say so! And That Is A Good Thing!

37. That's actually different. Let's do it this way...
OK. Let's be clear here. (Perhaps I should define my position a little bit better too.)

HE may lean to the left. ANY journalist can and probably does have political leanings. The difference is that a professional won't allow it to distort the stories they report. Keith is a pro. :)

I imagine, in the interview you mention, Keith felt he had some freedom that he doesn't feel he has while he's doing his job. For a pro it's kinda different when someone's asking you your personal opinion than it is when you're doing your job as a journalist.

17. I actually *do* think his show has a liberal slant
I agree with you're saying. he gives facts. But if you look at the show editorially, that's where you see the slant (NOT a bias ... just a slant). They cover stories the rest of the extremist media doesn't. If the rest would cover the same stories with some depth (not a brief mention at 4 AM, just so they can say, years later "of course we covered that") we'd see a lot less railing on them from our side.

So yeah, I think there's a liberal slant to his show.

And for that, I'm glad.

28. Agreed.
He is a real journalist - he takes some shots at the left from time-to-time, too. He's analytical and refuses to report in a vacuum, connecting the dots on nearly a daily basis.
This is how TV journalism should be: hard-hitting, edgy, investigative with just the right pinch of snark to keep hold of wandering American minds.
(and yes, he really said it. I heard it live).

I'm sure I've heard him take stabs at the left too; I just can't think of any examples at the moment.

Keep watching. It'll come up. ;)
