One thing I rather dislike about current the Selective Service System
The law since 1980 requires all men 18-26 to register for the draft. Failure to so is a felony. In addition, failure to register can disqualify men from federally backed financial aid programs for college.

The problem here is that the federal government has not prosecuted anyone for failure to register for the draft since 1986. On the other hand, the law about no financial aid for college is very much enforced. What does this mean? In practice, it means that rich boys, who do not need financial aid for college, can skirt the law and not register for the draft.

..that people are turned down for college help but are not prosecuted for not registering for the graft.
I've know several teenagers who have rich parents and they're not worried about going to jail..at all...

Ha..I meant to say "Draft" and not "graft" Talk about a Freudian slip!!

yeah. I can see how that could happen.

However, many states are now attaching the registration to the Drivers License system, so they are automatically registered when they go to the DMV.

My parents have to pay for my $34,000/yr tuition in full each year because we don't qualify for aid. I registered in 2000 at age 20, but things were different then than they are now. Thankfully, I am 25 now so I'm not really worried about the draft personally.

4. No. 247, 1970 - thank God
Obviously a tad older, but that was my lottery number. You may forget your phone number, but no one from that era forgets their lottery number. May none here go through the same.

11. No. 304, 1970 - also thanked God.
This could make for an interesting thread, too.

Where were you when the numbers were drawn, what was your number, and how did you react?

I was at my college student union, with several hundred other guys, watching one of the few dozen TVs on campus. I had more than a few beers afterwards. Folks with high numbers, like me, celebrated, and bought beers for the guys with low numbers. Oh yes, the drinking age was 18.

And yer right. I hope no one goes through that shit again.

5. The Problem With the "Selective Service System" is that it Exists
Its existance is a beacon to power-mad warmongers like Boosh**.
He wants more power. He wants to invade more countries. EASY!
Just start up the draft and he's got all the troops he wants to
start four more wars and declare martial law at home too.
No more pesky Constitutional rights. No more freedom.
Boosh** and Halliburton and PNAC and the Fundies will rule forever
and all will have to do their bidding.

9. Was it a Democratic Senate that sent it to his desk, by any chance?
Seems to me I remember Jimmy not getting his wishes on many things during these times... seems disingenious to blame Jimmy, one of the world's most prominent peace makers and humanitarians, for the draft.
