Pastor Accused of Running Out Dems Quits

N.C. Pastor Accused of Ousting Members Over Support of John Kerry Resigns

By TIM WHITMIRE Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. May 10, 2005 — A Baptist preacher accused of running out nine congregants who disagreed with his Republican politics resigned Tuesday, two days after calling the issue "a great misunderstanding."

Speaking from the pulpit during a meeting at East Waynesville Baptist Church, the Rev. Chan Chandler told church members that it would "cause more hurt for me and my family" if he stayed.

5. I can't believe how political your churches are in the States
You just don't hear it in Canada.

We sang Oh, Canada once when Canada Day fell on a Sunday. We've also been reminded to vote in tomorrow's election. Nothing was said on how to vote, just to vote.

18. In older British Anglican churches, you sometimes see WW2 and WW1-

-era regimental banners in churches, commemorating the fallen, and those sometimes have Union flags on them. Sometimes you see American, Canadian, French and Polish flags in that kind of display too. Fortunately, most nationalistic displays in commemoration have been displaced at the centre of proceedings by the poppy, an apt and suitably non-celebratory symbol of remembrance.

Sometimes there are also trades union banners, which sometimes have Union flags on them

I can't remember seeing a full Union flag on display. Maybe a George Cross on St George's Day. Never a Union flag.

And this is the state church!

On Edit:

Not quite.

It's a war memorial, and those are WW2-era flag, but they are full Union flags.

8. I stopped attending church services many years ago because
I didn't like what I was hearing from the pulpit.

There didn't seem to very much being said about loving your fellow man. From what I'm reading these days - nothing has changed very much to make me want to return.

Reminding someone to vote is a good thing. However suggestions from a preacher speaking for the church about who to vote for troubles me as it seems inappropriate.

7. How nice to hear the term "red-ass" again!
It's been a long time since I was in a part of the US where that wonderful term is used.

As for this pastor - yes, he'll probably ride this thing all the way to the bank, and try to look sincere as he claims it's all a "misunderstanding".

What about "if you plan to vote for Kerry you must repent or resign" is so easy to misunderstand?

15. Remove their tax-exempt status anyway.
That is the only reason he is leaving. Well, besides having to admit that he was lying right out his ass.

They are afraid the investigation will broaden, and the Baptist church will loose their IRS tax exempt status. I say, take it from the bastards anyway. The election has already been lost, and due to no small effort by the religious community.

Allowing religion to become a tax free campaign tool for the republicraps should not stand. They need to be hit and hit hard to curb this activity in the future.

Tax the bastards, Hit them with a huge fine.

20. Good luck with that case
I mean it sounds cool on a message board where everyone is 10 feet tall and bulletproof but there is no way any of what you said there could actually stand. The whole Baptist organization would have to be running candidate ads on their offical website and things of that nature before you even had.....well..... before you had a prayer.

34. I was thinking about that particular church.
I think it is important to start somewhere. This type of thing really should not go unchallanged.

Aren't there people suing the Catholic Church in general due to the actions of a single priest? I realize that there are allegations of a higher-level cover-up, but the Catholic Church is just as large as the Baptist Church, and there has been civil action there.

I still feel a church somewhere needs to loose its tax-exempt status. This ice does need to be broken.

23. "hurt for me and my family"

Notice, he takes no responsibility, but frames it in terms of hurt to himself. No apologies for any hurt to others or the community.
Typicle... in the tradition of Bush his idol, taking responsibility for ones actions? never!

typical of NPD-Narcissist Personality Disorder (see online definitions). No apologies, no responsibility, no empathy for others, only "I'm a victim," poor little me. To look for such normal behavior as apologizing is completely futile and just gives the Narcissist more attention. This is why they can abuse others so smoothly and effortlessly--it feels "right.' The lies like "It's all a misunderstanding" are what they truly believe. These types of personalities attract and support each other in a smug community of the Entitled, eg. Bushco.

East Waynesville pastor resigns in wake of controversy

WAYNESVILLE — Pastor Chan Chandler submitted his resignation to the members of East Waynesville Baptist Church on Tuesday, a move some said was the only way to resolve current tensions at the church.

At a meeting at the church, Chandler got up and led those in attendance in prayer, read his resignation and then left the meeting with his wife, Melody, without making any comments to the assembled media, a church member said.

<snip>
Moments after the embattled minister left, a group of his supporters streamed out of the church.

“It’s really sad that all this happened,” a teary-eyed Misty Tucker said before getting in her car. Tucker said she would no longer attend East Waynesville Baptist Church. “I’m not going to serve where there are so many ungodly people.”
