List of proposed base closings and realignments
http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/sections/news/050513_Base_CLosings.pdf

A quick look at it shows it pretty well across the board, and the lobbying for changes will be furious, so who knows what the final list will look like.

7. I see Otis on Cape Cod got the axe
and, my gawd, is that overdue!! Too bad they didn't close that thing down before it poisoned so many of the wells in the adjacent towns.

Alas, the base near me will be expanding to take up the slack for Cannon closing. Oh, well.

5. I was raised in ingleside...
almost an entire town has been built around this base since the oil industry went pretty much bust in the 80's. Corpus Christi put up tax dollars to bring this base in - I'm sure other towns will suffer, too.

It was Phil Gramm's baby. I wonder if it will be on the final list.

6. Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL dodged a bullet
(no pun intended)

Huntsville didn't need to lose RA. Huntsville was hit before when it was pretty much downgraded after the space race cooled. RA is still a big deal there.

9. Since I work there I'm relieved
It would be bad news for Huntsville's economy.

Marshall Space Flight Center is located on Redstone Arsenal. I've worked both as a NASA contractor and an Army Contractor. The Army has more money to spend than NASA. When I was on the NASA side, the building I worked in was so bad that a feral cat fell through a urine soaked ceiling tile and landed on someone interviewing for a job.

10. Dang!!
:spray:

I was born in Huntsville. I lived on Alabama Street for the first 3 years of my life. I grew up in Athens.

I love Redstone Arsenal. It's a beautiful little post. When I was in the Army and visiting my mom, I'd go there to cash checks, go to the PX, etc.

Huntsville couldn't afford to lose RA, that is true. It would be very, very bad news for Huntsville's economy.

16. that does make me homesick
When I die, I want my ashes to be spread from the top of Monte Santo Mountain. I love to drive up there after it's come up a good rain. The water pouring off the sides is always beautiful.

21. I loved it. It was really nice
I just couldn't stand living out in the sticks after my mom remarried and moved us to Jackson county when I was 16. I joined the Army after high school for the college money and haven't lived in AL since then.

11. I wonder how many of these are politically motivated
My first thought when Ingleside was on the list was "Aha! Ortiz is a Democrat and Corpus is, if not blue, then sort of purple" so of course it is on the list. Perhaps I need a tinfoil hat!! Everything these people do has an ulterior motive. Like the "plane" that "violated the White House air space" while the president was NOT notified. Sounds like someone needed a boost in the polls!! But I digress.

moving at least one major operation out of there to somewhere else.

Maybe they're consolidating training at LeJeune?

14. SD
The biggest closing will happen in South Dakota. The people of SD are getting what they deserve for voting out Daschle in favor of Thune.

18. Wonder how Thune is going to explain this?
Wonder if the voters will eat him alive??

Wonder if Daschle is sitting somewhere right now saying, "I told you so" very softly to himself?
