Draft - remember the claim that 2 years not long enough?
the professional army needed folks more than 2 years to get their money out of the training. Well looks like that may have changed. This article from USAToday caught my eye:

1. Once you enlist, they have you for as long as needed.
Its called 'stop-loss'.

2. NPR this morning on new tactic
I heard a peice on NPR this morning, which
is glossing over facts more and more, about the
recruiter's questionable methods as reported
by a growing number of targets. In the report
a military spokesman said they were going to
try a new format, giving new recruits the option of
serving only 15 month contracts.
Uh-huh.

6. i caught that too
npr gets worse every day. the story was about the "values standdown" and the army telling their recruiters to remember their army values. then they put out this 15 months crap, and no one says the words stop loss.

9. I really don't like NPR, but I listen to see
how far down the drain they are.
They have been hijacked by the usual suspects you know.

11. yeah
i know. breaks my heart. my local station is good, and they do good foreign affairs, etc. but the network just gets worse every day. the news break yesterday about the georgia(?) abortion bill just made me puke. matter of factly stated "women would be shown pictures of fetuses" yada yada, with no mention that someone might not think this was a good idea. like it was a crackdown on jaywalking or something.

13. I heard that one too...disgusting
If they are going to force women to
look at fetuses and demand their
parents attend if they are under age,
then I think in all fairness, they need
a slide show of "back street" abortion jobs too.

4. Yup, you sign and raise your hand, you could be in for life
Stop loss has that capability, it doesn't matter what the contract says.

3. I hope nobody's that stupid
Sure you sign up for only 15 months but they have you for 8 additional years in the reserves. We all know almost half of the troops in Iraq are from the reserves. They're getting desperate. Not much left to try before starting a lottery.

5. The army is betting they are that stupid.
The old "fine print" manuever.
This looks like a last desperate attempt before the draft. I am sure a draft law has been written and is ready to go at the drop of a hat.

7. I think they are in for a surprise with a draft.
Edited on Fri May-13-05 10:00 AM by BeHereNow
I think we may witness something incredible
if they start a draft.
I don't think the kids will go.
I really don't.
ALL the young people I talk to say the same thing.
"I'd rather go to prison."
The young people are more awake than ever before.
I see something coming- they are sick and tired of
the way things are going.

8. Amazingly a lot of American are not that stupid
Army and Marines missed their recruiting goals by over fifty percent for April and forty percent for year to date. The Army is very worried. Funniest thing though they are blaming it on excellent economy not people dying and killing.

10. Thank goodness the dissent is growing!
Edited on Fri May-13-05 10:11 AM by BeHereNow
I think we are going to see growing numbers
of enlisted men and women refusing to
return to Iraq. I hear that the rumble is growing
within the ranks.
The Bush Cabal is going down. They have
abused the military and the military is on to them.
They are not happy with the neocon-nazi management.

On Edit: And you KNOW the flag waving x-tains
aren't going to get their asses over there.
They just want to drive around with cute
llittle ribbons on their SUVs...

12. Excellent economy?
Hey, I'm out of work and it'll be at least three more months before I even get a shot at a job out of my union hall.

And I work in new construction.

Where is this "excellent economy"?

Tiajuana?

People don't join the armed forces because only an idiot deliberately walks into the crosshairs of a terrorist's rifle.

Us old folks didn't raise too many idiots, at least not enough for Bush's wars.

14. That's what I think too-
My kid is eighteen and when I hear
the conversations between her friends
on this topic, I am led to think that
the neocons have NO idea how
few of these young people will go, even if they
are drafted. As one of them said,
"What are they going to do? Throw all of us in prison?
They can't, there are too many of us who will refuse..."
It's going to get real interesting, real soon.
I think we are going to see draft card burning
that will make the Nam protest days look tame.
These kids are PISSED at Bush and his war criminal cabal.

16. Too many people trust the government
And yes, there are people that stupid. Remember the stats about how many Americans believe that Saddam was behind 9-11?

17. DRAFT = POLITICAL SUICIDE
The Congress and Senate WILL NEVER EVER EVER EVER jump off that cliff with this REGIME. THERE WILL BE NO DRAFT. THEY CAN'T START ONE. IF THEY DO, IT WILL LEAD TO TOTAL CHAOS.

If they start a draft, the RepubliCANT'S will NEVER EVER EVER vote Republican AGAIN. The Republicans will start the IMPEACHMENT TRIALS THEMSELVES.

Waiting for the IMPEACHMENT WHILE THE SCANDALS KEEP UNFOLDING
