Poll question: What is your local newspaper and rate its political leanings
I'm just curious as to the status of newspapers across the country. Does your paper seem like a mouthpiece to the repukes or does it come across "fair & balanced" (and I"m not talking the Fox variety)

My local paper is the Wilmington (DE) News-Journal which is pretty much the main paper for the state. But since DE is so small we're pretty functional with the news we can get out of the Philly Inquirer and Baltimore Sun.

I find my paper is pretty non-biased. The letters to the editor favor the left, but I think once a week the NJ has a "conservative" day for the LTTE, usually on a Saturday when they have the least amount of papers purchased.

So what's the scoop on your local paper

1. Colorado Springs Gazette
:puke: Does it get any more biased?

I made the mistake of subscribing when I first moved here last summer. I knew NOTHING about the area and how conservative it is. Can't wait to leave here this summer (husband is military and that's why I'm here).

...Augusta, Maine Kennebec Journal (essentially the same paper, identical editorials).

Pretty liberal, rethuglicans HATE them.

Opened their endorsement of Kerry by calling **'s administration a disaster.

Also, the ONLY cryptograms I've EVER had such difficulty solving. I love a good challenge!

3. Minneapolis Star Tribune, probably the last really liberal newspaper
When I lived in California, and before the LA Times became an appendix of the Chicago Tribune, I thought it was liberal, at least, compared to the Wall St. Journal. But in reality the LAT wanted so much to appear "balanced" and to bend so much backward that it ended up in a permanent pretzel position.

Even the strib allows for "counterpoints" by RWers... it really has to with one senator and the governor being Republicans but the editorial board is liberal - no doubt about it (even following the traditional "nanny state" but that's OK).

4. St. Pete Times
It was fairly progressive, until about a year ago, when they changed editors. Decidedly right-wing leaning now. No more Paul Krugman, etc.

Tampa Tribune, reactionary rag.

5. Other: Corporate.
Courier Journal--Louisville, KY. They lean slightly to the left on social issues but are economic elitists. A perfect example was the editorial they did when Dean was named DNC Chairman. They hoped he would be more like NAFTA-supporting Governor Dean, rather than corporate-bashing Presidential Candidate Dean.

7. Tuscaloosa News is mildly liberal
It was better before it was bought by the New York Times.

8. Anchorage Daily News
which is fairly liberal although they do reserve a corner of the Op-Ed section for the editors of the old Anchorage Times (which the News bought out some time ago), a much more conservative mouthpiece, which regularly spews all the right-wing Republican garbage. The News supported John Kerry and Tony Knowles in the 2004 election, which is good enough for me, especially here in this red state. Letters to the editor are often left-leaning.

9. Grand Rapids Press
I know for a fact that it is a Republican based rag. My grandfather used to work for them and I also have heard that the current editor is a Bush loving Repug who doesn't print any LTTE's criticizing *

15. Louisville Courier-Journal: Surprisingly Liberal
The Louisville Courier-Journal (whose editorial cartoonist Nick Anderson just won the Pulitzer thank-you-very-much) is an amazingly liberal "upper south" newspaper. I say amazingly, because it has retained its liberal bent despite the early-80's aquisition by Gannett when long-time publisher Barry Bingham, Sr. sold it amidst much-publicized family in-fighting.

Believe me, it's a refereshing oasis in an area surrounded by fundies.
