ARCATA TAKES STAND ON IRAQ: After months of discussion, the Arcata City Council last week voted 3-2, with Mayor Michael Machi and Councilmember Mark Wheetley dissenting, to approve a city resolution condemning "federal lawlessness" associated with the war in Iraq. The resolution, which declares the war "illegal," "immoral" and "based on lies," has engendered a significant amount of opposition in the city's business community, among others. The Arcata Chamber of Commerce's board of directors voted to oppose the resolution after a survey of its members showed that 68 percent of respondents thought that similar resolutions over the years have had a negative impact on their businesses. The resolution was sponsored by Councilmember Dave Meserve.
