Here we go again. "Schinder-Schiavo volunteers" butting into another case
Edited on Sun May-15-05 12:49 AM by Bluebear
CLEARWATER, Fl., May 14 /Christian Wire Service/ - The volunteers with the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation, along with the family of Terri Schiavo, are urging Jacksonville, Florida resident, Eliza Thomas, to allow her 34 year old husband to live.

The Foundation has learned that Scott Thomas suffered brain injury in September of 2004 and has since been incapacitated and dependent on others. His mother, Pamela Patton, has petitioned the courts for guardianship of the disabled man and was awarded a temporary guardianship which could expire as early as June 3, 2005. Mr. Thomas's wife, Eliza, is currently seeking to take his guardianship over.

Ms. Patton is currently pursuing neurological testing and treatment options with a Clearwater, Florida neurologist, Dr. William Hammesfahr.

Mrs. Thomas, however, has reportedly stated that her intention is to move her husband to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and seek the authority to direct the removal of his gastric feeding tube, causing his death by dehydration and starvation.

According to Ms. Patton, her son speaks a limited vocabulary, gives affirmative and negative hand signals and has successfully answered questions of where he lives, where he attended school and his situation. She states that he is aware and oriented.

The volunteers of the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation are urging Florida's Department of Children and Families (Florida's social services agency) to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr. Thomas's injuries and to ensure that he is not currently a victim of abuse and neglect.

Terri Schiavo's family is asking Mrs. Eliza Thomas to err on the side of life. According to them, the dehydration and starvation death suffered by their daughter in March of this year was anything but a peaceful and painless death.

Statement of Bob Schindler, Terri Schiavo's father: "The suffering our daughter endured and her death over the course of nearly two weeks was horrific. I am pleading with Mrs. Thomas to please reconsider her decision to seek the removal of Scott's feeding tube and to allow him to receive the therapy and rehabilitation he needs to improve. I beg Mrs. Thomas to give her husband a chance."

5. Every hospice patient must live as long as possible!
That seems to be the goal.

2. To "err on the side of life" is still to err.
Perhaps being correct would be a better solution?

3. I don't think they'll get any traction.
I don't know why they insist on trying to control everyone else's life, when clearly they don't have a life of their own.

7. for the family's sake
I hope it doesn't get any traction, but it would be interesting to see what delay, frist and stupid bush would do. The religious right would be demanding they stand up again, but to do so would be bad for them in the eyes of most of the population.

27. ding ding!
If this gets publicity, the congressional idiots would be hamstrung, especially Frist, who is 1) sucking up to the talibornagain as hard as he can AND 2) fully aware that everyone else in the Country wants them to BUTT OUT!

11. The real joke is subtle, though.
The volunteers....are urging Florida's Department of Children and Families...to ensure that he is not currently a victim of abuse and neglect.

DCF probably wouldn't be able to find the guy.

12. Put a feeding tube in it, Schindler!
Sounds like they got a nice little operation going. They can expect regular donations from our fundie friends for years to come.

Hey, I can't blame the Schindlers. My only hope on early retirement is the success of my children too. I just hope they don't have to die for it first.

13.  Dr. William Hammesfahr!!!!! He's...
the asshole who was "nominated" for a Nobel and stuck his nose into Schiavo, claiming he, and he alone, could somehow regrow her brain.

Giving parents false hope once again. Kick him back under his rock.

As a Quaker, and a pacifist, I am against all violence, but there is that part of me that is becoming more difficult to suppress that says the only way to deal with these people is a baseball bat.

Or at least a 2x4.

Even a horsewhip wouldn't beat any sense, shame, or decency into them. It's got to be a bludgeon.

14. This Would Call For A Civil Suit....That's What They Want
If this were my situation, I'd sue the Swindler's greedy family and supporters for everything they have.

But I'd give them another forum...another place to set up their traveling circus and hump for the bucks and get their mugs on the tube.

Hopefully all the family members involved here will tell the outsiders to get the f out and the courts will act in this case according to the medical evidence and testimony, not some trunicated media circus.

15. These people are such complete hypocrites
What is it with this crowd and Florida? Is this the only state where they feel comfortable acting like whack-jobs? Two children...two babies in Texas died because hospitals refused to help them anymore. One had his life-support removed and the other was to have it removed when she died.

Yet not one of these so-called right to lifers showed their faces or lifted a finger to help these two children. Could it be because they weren't white? Why weren't they there? The parents of both children wanted them to live...to not be disconnected from their medicine or life support. So what is the difference?

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it...I hate these people...all of them. God forgive me, but I do. They are not Christians and never will be.

Really. If they're really worried about "Life", that's a good place to start.

23. Cue Hannity! Get me a media circus... STAT!
Same cast of shysters and frauds, same tearing apart of what little familial bonds still remain, same sad sad situation all around. Another public spectacle created from what should be a time of quiet dignity.

With any luck, Mr. Thomas will use his 'limited vocabulary' and tell these ghouls to leave him alone and let him die in peace.

26. IF he can speak then he can tell them whether or not he wants to live or
die, right? Really, it is that simple. Why don't the courts ask him?

AND DO THESE PEOPLE THINK WE ARE A BUNCH OF IDIOTS? Obviously the man is more incapacitated than they are admitting or a judge would simply say Mr. Patton what would you like to have happen to you?

Yes, I understand there are mental incapacities that might not allow him to think that through but my point is if he is only suffering from being mentally and physically challenged a judge can certainly see that for himself. It does NOT take a medical degree to figure out if a person is sentient in some way. Even when a person is suffering from some of the worst types of incapacitating diseases sentience can be determined by anyone with a little compassion.

28. I don't see any mention of his brain function or CAT scan results.
Without those, it's impossible to tell if he has any change of recovery. Of course, since that information isn't in the 'Christian' Communication Network story, I would have to believe he has a flat EEG and no chance of recovery.
