Something to remember about Watergate (and the Blair memo)
Edited on Sun May-15-05 02:11 PM by Jade Fox
and how it relates to Memogate:

The whole Watergate story would not have gone anywhere had there
not been a commitment on the part of the Washington Post of the day
(reporters Woodward & Bernstein, editor Ben Bradlee, publisher Kay
Grahm) to keep pursuing the story, and keep publishing their findings
prominently in the paper. They were laughed at by many others in the
media for their "obsession" with such a trivial story. But it was just that
repeated exposer which gave the story legs, and forced those in
government to deal with it. (All this is show fairly well in the movie
"All the President's Men").

Don't believe for one minute that Americans don't care that Bush lied to
get us into Iraq. They know he did. And if the media would take this
information about the British memor and refuse to let it be dismissed
by Bushco (Watergate was repeatedly dismissed as a 'second-rate
burglary' by Nixonco), the people would respond.

1. I think relying on the MSM to do serious, hard-nosed investigative...
journalism is misplaced optimism. The MSM has become a lapdog for the powers that be.

The relationship between the media and the power brokers has degenerated to such an incestuous degree that it would make a mink breeder gag.

2. I have some hope for the NYT....
They are at least reporting stuff.

But it would take a major commitment on their part to make this memo
thing stick. So far the NYT has declined. You would think they might relish
the opportunity to go down in history (for something other that Judith
Miller, that is).

3. I believe that, more and more, the editorial news decisions...
at big newspapers and in network newsrooms are controlled by corporate considerations -- what sells and what doesn't.

As long as the main impetus behind our MSM is a for-profit mindset, those in positions of real power have little to fear.

But, I hope you're right and there is a trickle of the truth that eventually floods out the lies and distortions.

4. The flood has got to happen...
eventually. The question is will it happen in time to stop the Neocons
from doing (more) very serious damage to this country. I'm awfully afraid
not, but its frustrating: if a major news organization made the commitment
to bring Bushco to justice, it could happen pretty easily actually. There
is so much to work with.

I don't believe its because people don't care.

5. All we need is for a few brave patriots in the Congress to fall on their
sword and keep pressing the WH. They can even hold up some legislation until they get answers. If only there were some brave people there.

6. Good points
On Stephanie Millers show when Conyers made an apperance he also compared it to Watergate and told how it started out as a little story in the back of a newspaper and it kept growing. I think it'll be like Watergate probably. Only thing different is the republicans control everything in the government now. If we want to do anything with this is to take back 2006 and do investigation's.
