Venezuela slaps U.S. medical firm with antimonopoly fine
CARACAS, Venezuela, May 13 (Reuters) - Venezuela's state antimonopoly watchdog said on Friday it was imposing a $1.6 million fine on the local unit of U.S. medical equipment maker Becton Dickinson and Co. (BDX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) for "abusing its position" in the Venezuelan market.

2. Aids and HIV at risk
"The Pro-Competencia agency said it was also requesting state prosecutors to open an investigation into Becton Dickinson Venezuela C.A. on the grounds that its behavior had allegedly put at risk the health of HIV-infected and AIDS patients in Venezuela.

Pro-Competencia said Becton Dickinson Venezuela had refused to sell to its local authorized distributor, Inmunolab Laboratorios C.A., chemical reagents used in Becton Dickinson's medical testing kits for HIV and AIDS patients.

It added that since Becton Dickinson controlled a 100 percent local market share for these FACSCount diagnostic systems used in the treatment of AIDS in Venezuela, this move by the U.S. company put the local patients at risk."

9. Wonder what Venezuela's immigration policies are.

We visited many years ago while on a cruise and were impressed. Universal education thry college, cheap gas for citizens.
And a leader who isn't in the pockets of corporations.

Sounds like paradise to me.

13. But you would be tearing your hair out after a day of listening to their
media. All four television stations and radio and newspapers are owned by anti-Chavez people who run hate stories about Chavez 24/7. Their media is full of pro-USA anti-Chavez so you will meet many Freeper-like people there.

15. One station
is government run, the one Chavez makes his addresses on. They have a pretty good state-run media system happening up in there. But yeah, hair tearing would ensue for people like us
"Chavez isn't democratic because he isn't running a corporate state! Kill him!"
"He's turning us into a leftist dictator run state! What with all those free elections and local councils and what have you! Hes a fascist I tell you!"

18. It does sound like paradise!!
I did chat with an american who married a native and is living in Venezuela now. he said that it is a beautiful and friendly country..and that if your attitude is one of appreciation of venezuela..then venezuelas attitude will be one of appreciation for you. he also said that immigration to venezuela is easier than to mexico..where i have lived for the past almost 4 yrs...and in mexico you do have to jumpt through a number of immigration hoops...but i have always thought it was worth the jumping...so..it sounds like it is easier in Venezuela

4. It's great to see they are looking at a variety of companies
who might be pressured by the Bush regime to short change Venezuela in multiple ways. From the article:
The Pro-Competencia agency said it was also requesting state prosecutors to open an investigation into Becton Dickinson Venezuela C.A. on the grounds that its behavior had allegedly put at risk the health of HIV-infected and AIDS patients in Venezuela.

Pro-Competencia said Becton Dickinson Venezuela had refused to sell to its local authorized distributor, Inmunolab Laboratorios C.A., chemical reagents used in Becton Dickinson's medical testing kits for HIV and AIDS patients.

It added that since Becton Dickinson controlled a 100 percent local market share for these FACSCount diagnostic systems used in the treatment of AIDS in Venezuela, this move by the U.S. company put the local patients at risk.
(snip)
Very odd behavior on the part of Becton Dickinson Venezuela. Hard to see any decent motivation for their actions.

6. We cannot do that here because our anti-monopoly laws have been neutered
Isn't it funny that we are accusing a country of being against human rights when that country has anti-monopoly laws and we do not.

7. "state antimonopoly watchdog ". I am literally stunned.
Stunned by the beauty of seeing those three words linked together in an actual meaningful context describing a real life practical application.

Corporate influence in the US government is responsible for virtually every problem that we have in the US. The only reason that we have not been able to solve our social, economic, and political problems is because monopolistic/oligopolistic corporations and some of the wealthy individuals that they have spawned prevent us from evolving as a democracy in order to secure and maintain their position of wealth and power in the US class heirarchy.

Basically, they keep us from solving our national problems because they want to maintain their position as an aristocratric American (and global) nouveau riche "nobility".

Chavez might really be a genuinely great leader.

11. At the end of the 1800s, we were the leader here.
For the first time in the world, a nation passed a law against monopolies and trusts. It was called the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890. In 1914, it was followed up by the Clayton Act of 1914, which strengthened it further. Then came the labor movement in the 1930s. We've fallen a long way since those days in the fight to control big business.

the fight against big business was already being lost in 1886, with the idea of corporate personhood.
