Newsweek: Got Gitmo Right

Contrary to White House spin, the allegations of religious desecration at Guantanamo published by Newsweek on May 9, 2005, are common among ex-prisoners and have been widely reported outside the United States. Several former detainees at the Guantanamo and Bagram prisons have reported instances of their handlers sitting or standing on the Koran, throwing or kicking it in toilets, and urinating on it. Prior to the Newsweek article, the New York Times reported a Guantanamo insider asserting that the commander of the facility was compelled by prisoner protests to address the problem and issue an apology.

America was not founded on "peace at all costs". It was built on a violent revolution, you know...

the Military has no problem with religious persecution of prisoners. So why would Gitmo be any different?

It almost seems like this report was just too shocking and too embarassing, so they had to kill it.

Ironic, though.

I was under the impression that most Americans wouldn't care about people trashing the Quran.

And I happended to catch Robin Roberts of Good Morning, America falsely stated that Newsweek was apologizing for publishing an article based on erroneous information.

C-Span did the same thing this morning - a caller had to bring the C-Span's host's attention to the fact that the headline of the letter was misleading. The headline noted that Newsweek was apologizing for the article itself, when in fact, Newsweek was apologizing for the reactions that pissed-off Muslims had with regard to the article.

They'll probably say, "Oh it was all a screw up by the "liberal" media, and now look at how these crazy, fanatical Muslims are over reacting to a non-issue."

However, while the retraction might satisfy the head up the ass Bushbots, it certainly will not fool the Muslims. Each day that goes by, I feel more certain that in all these stories of sexual humiliation, prison camp torture and the blatant disrespect and contempt shown to the Muslim religion we are seeing part of a larger agenda to intentionally foment distrust, anger, hate and unrest between the US and Arabs and Muslims.

It is very obviouslsy NOT the way to decrease tensions and to decrease the risk of Muslims joining up with terrorists groups and engaging in terrorist activity against the USA. Someone's agenda is being served in all of this. You can bet your bottom dollar on it.

The only people that are wrong here are the muslims getting angry about people doing something to a BOOK. Ill shit all over the Koran and the Bible, who cares it means nothing. Its just words on a piece of paper.

Mark Whitaker, Newsweek's editor, explaining why the mag went with the original story, says:

Although other major news organizations had aired charges of Qur'an desecration based only on the testimony of detainees, we believed our story was newsworthy because a U.S. official said government investigators turned up this evidence. So we published the item.

Then it turned out that the anonymous official who told Newsweek the tale started pedaling the other way. That gave the Pentagon an excuse to get all huffy. In this morning's New York Times, for instance, Katherine Q. Seelye writes:

Pentagon officials said that no such information was included in the internal report and responded to Newsweek's apology with unusual anger.
