Strategically, Newsweek may have done the right thing.
Edited on Mon May-16-05 06:48 PM by Eric J in MN
Taking a dive to try to move on in the face of the rightwing noise machine.

I believe a guard at Gitmo did flush pages of the Koran, and that a source did read about it in an Army report.

But Newsweek doesn't have videotape of the incident or a copy of the report.

The rightwing noise machine is much bigger than the leftwing media which includes "Air America."

1. Newsweek did the expedient thing.
Had they done the right thing, they'd have stuck to their guns and fought it out. Until someone does, the free press is effectively DOA.

2. But how well could they have fought wihout a copy of the report?
And with so little left-wing media to support them?

4. I agree -the retraction was Not that truth was not told about the incident
but that the US Gov can not be assumed to have agreed that truth was told just because they reviewed the article for non-truth, found one such "non-truth" that was removed, and sent the article back to Newsweek with the Koran story unchanged.

The media is full spin to report this as a huge Newsweek "error" - I guess so those damn riots in the Muslim world will stop.

5. I don't know what happend at Guantanamo, nor do I care.
Anything distasteful done to a religious artifact offends someone yet it happens all the time.

It is never worth killing for. People died over this and whether it happened or not the deaths bother me,not the Koran incident.

about paper with holy words on it being flushed down a toilet.

I am horrified that this would lead to killing as I said in my previous post.

you realize this is what the nazis done?

whenever an officer of the state uses a persons religion to persecutes them that is a SERIOUS issue.

and you see, even though it might not bother you it does bother a great many other people.

Newsweek should have held their ground. A news publication is only as good as their credibility. I don't think the decision to redact the story came from the newsroom.

I wouldn't be surprise if this is followed by a bunch of resignations from Newsweek.

If Newsweek is right, why should it be banned?

If Newsweek is wrong, why should Bush apologize?

18. Sadly I agree. Who would stand by them?
Edited on Mon May-16-05 07:37 PM by Tinoire
It is up to US to fight for them! It is up to US to get the word out that they did not invent anything and that these incidents, and much worse, are very widespread.

I am more disgusted with the politicians who white-washed Abu Ghraib than I am with Newsweek because every single one of those politicians, Republican and Democrat, did much worse than throw the Koran in a bucket of excrement. The condoned it with their tacit support. They condoned it by not prosecuting the military brass when the path led all the way up to Doug Feith's office.

They condoned it by giving those sick fucks their permission to wage this war.

And they're condoning it now by not saying a word about what the Reich Ministry of Propaganda's treatment of Newsweek.

Not a single politician has stood up and asked the White House what their false outrage is about. Not a single one has kept Abu Ghraib in the spotlight. This is all so sick beyond belief.

Dean? Clark? Kerry? Kucinich? Boxer? Feingold? C'mon boys! Let's hear what you have to say about this!

20. you agree that the media should give-in to demands by the WH?!?

http://images.globalfreepress.com

it is up to us to DEMAND that they get to the bottom of stories instead of taking their orders from the WH.

bowing down to WH pressure will only ensure that they will continue to get away with everything.

27. We can't even get our reps to get to the bottom of anything
Edited on Mon May-16-05 08:18 PM by Tinoire
and not take orders from the White House. Look how many times we've been thoroughly betrayed by them. Those are the people I blame.

I'm not happy with but what would you have them do? They didn't even report anything earth-shattering. They reported an old truth. I don't agree that they should give in to demands but I don't agree that they should be vilified for having stuck it out longer than most other media organs and having retracted under duress.

Meanwhile, the NYT gets off scott free for banging the drums of war and lying through its teeth from day one and all that they did willingly, with NO pressure.

I don't want to lean on Newsweek and help destroy them by putting them in a no-win situation. I'd rather defeat the real whores, the real collaborators who have been aiding and abetting and got us into a situation where the press can't even report anything.

Retracted under duress...

Frankly, I think it's our politicians' jobs to get to the bottom of this story- but not one word, not one peep. Not one word or peep from any Dem party official or from any of the pretend saviors of the 2008 election. In 8 months, they'll all have plenty to say- in 3 years they'll all be rewriting history about how they said this, said that, but now, when we need them, when Newsweek needs them, not one peep from the cowards.

It's not Newsweek's fault. They didn't vote for this war and they didn't cheer it on. I truly do feel for them. Especially since all of this is for reporting old news.

29. I'm not happy about them caving in
Somewhere in the middle of the big field of our two positions, there's a HUGE middle where we can meet on this one ;)

I guess I've become so used to no one standing up and fighting (well, very, very few) that it no longer shocks me. I guess these last 3 years of beating my head against brick walls have made me too cynical...
