Edited on Mon May-16-05 09:19 PM by Dr_eldritch
Republican Roscoe Bartlett is talking about Peak Oil on the house floor!

Is this current or re-run?

1. Re-Run
I think. He spoke about it a month or so ago. I actually sent him an email in thanks, being that he represents another portion of my state.

His speech earlier mentioned the end of oil having disastrous effects on our agriculture, as our current agriculture system depends on petrochemical based fertilizers & insecticides. I beleive he specifically mentioned not having enough food to feed the pigs to feed the people.

Of course vegetarianism is out of the question, I guess. Or just eating meat.

However, it is possible to raise more food per acre using organic methods than monocropped mechanized agriculture. It does require more farm labor (but less industrial labor) - - making it expensive to grow food this way in the US.

2. When are the Dems going to start talking about this?
I believe this is the issue that can bring the Democrats back into power. Where are Feingold, Kucinich, Sanders, and others at?

Energy independence is a win-win situation as we are no longer dependant on foreign oil, create jobs by building an infrastucture for renewables. The theme could be "empowering America."

Check out the Apollo Alliance for more info. Do a search for their website, I don't remember the address.

4. food
Gasoline has been 2 to 3 times more expensive (due to heavy excise taxes) in Europe for decades, yet their agricultural sector seems to do nicely. Do they have separate gas prices for farmers, or have European farmers just somehow adjusted to higher prices?

Gasoline in Argentina carries almost twice the price than here in the US (actually MUCH higher when you consider the low peso/dollar rate of exchange and the very low prices price of Argentine consumer goods), yet Argentina not only feeds itself, but much of Europe, and increasingly China. How do they do it?

I think that farmers will have no choice but to pass higher energy costs to the consumers. Still, a 100% increase in the price of wheat will only add about a nickel to the price of a $2.00 loaf of bread. The real cost to consumers comes when foods are transported across the country. Perhaps we will be forced to change our food distribution and transportation mindset, and make more locally-grown foods available.
