Newsweek did NOT say it didn't occur. Look at what they say

...
Two weeks ago, in our issue dated May 9, Michael Isikoff and John Barry reported in a brief item in our Periscope section that U.S. military investigators had found evidence that American guards at the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, had committed infractions in trying to get terror suspects to talk, including in one case flushing a Qur'an down a toilet. Their information came from a knowledgeable U.S. government source, and before deciding whether to publish it we approached two separate Defense Department officials for comment. One declined to give us a response; the other challenged another aspect of the story but did not dispute the Qur'an charge.

2. Last Night's Nightline went into this in depth--they only recant on
the one witness, NOT the story. And immediately the Right started calling the story "utterly flasified." (this also from Nightline) NOT true!

The wingers aren't interested in the truth, just exciting the riabble into killing liberals, especially liberal media types. Their tactics are unconscionable.

In other threads here we find the story is corroborated numerous times since March 2003! It's up to get this truth out.

6. They are doing their own investigation

three points to remember:

1. The unnamed source - a high ranking government official - had been used repeatedly in past articles and there was no reason to not trust his information.

2. A Pentagon official was shown the article before publishing and had no problems with it (per Newsweek editor).

3. The article was out for over a week before the administration threw a fit.

of course not. They're just pointing the finger; using Newsweek to discredit the media in general.
Common sense tells me that interrogators would use the Koran to influence detainees - makes sense.

Newsweek showed the article to a Pentagon official before it was published; he did not have a problem with the article.

...who have gotten out of there said it happened "as a matter of ROUTINE." He also gave the expected "Islamic world aghast" statement.

The Rove squad may be sorry that they overplayed this hand.

Edit--this story is old, btw...see my post on another thread. The reports were out there in July 04 that this was going on.

unwashed masses. The Rove propaganda team is on top of their game again.
