The obvious difference between the earlier stories on Koran desecration and the Newsweek story is that earlier reports were based entirely on unsubstantiated DETAINEE accounts, while the Newsweek story quoted a senior US government official who said the US military itself had confirmed the abuse, based on its own internal report. That (if correct) would have been a FIRST and that resonated in the Muslim world. But it wasn't correct. I agree with you that where there's smoke, there's fire. But don't short-change the media by understating the meltdown or the sincere soul-searching my colleagues at Newsweek are going through right now. Regards, Jim Maceda NBC News
