The Quran or the oil?

I have been wondering about this Quran and Newsweek thing, and the reactions here on DU. I am an atheist, but I live in a Muslim country. One that is getting more and more anti-American every day. Almost everybody I know are practicing Muslims, some more devout, some less, including my parents. What I am trying to say is, I know their sensibilities. Throwing Quran into a toilet is a bad thing, yes, for sure.

But invading a country for its oil is unmeasurably worse than anything you can do to Quran. It is still a book, pages and ink. Disrespecting it is rude, but not worth rioting. Hell, it was just a story in the papers, probably less noticed than, say, that Shakira happens to be in Turkey.


Don't miss the point, and don't delude yourselves the Islamic world hates Americans because of the ignorance or disrespect. It always was and still is the politics and money: it is about the imperalism.

I think that it is a sad thing that the majority of Americans remain ignorant about Islam. We have too few people who have listened to the voices of Muslim people from the Middle East or from this country. I think one of the best measures of the insulting level of ignorance is Americans who say they are not insulted by flushing a book in a toilet. It isn't about what non-Muslims in America think. The world is a big place, and we are not so isolated or so powerful that we can afford the luxury of such stupidity.
