GOP beating us on nuke phone calls: We must call NOW, before it's too late
Edited on Wed May-18-05 05:06 PM by Dickie Flatt
Someone posted a message to an email list here in Minnesota stating that Democratic Senator Mark Dayton's Minnesota office has received over 100 calls from nuclear option supporters, and just one from nuclear option opponents.

This is not good. Mark Dayton is safely on our side (even so he still needs our support), but some Democrats may not be so firmly against the nuclear option. And if we want to stop Bill Frist, we will need to convince some Republicans to come to our side.

Each and every one of us needs to call our Senators NOW.

If your Senator is a Democrat, call now. Let him or her know that you are counting on them to oppose the nuclear option. Let him or her know that you will accept no compromise that results in the end of judicial filibusters.

If your Senator is a Republican, call now. Let him or her know that by supporting the nuclear option, they are leaving as their legacy the destruction of 200 years of Senate tradition. Let him or her know that you will not let them get away with breaking the rules in order to destroy the filibuster. Even though they keep it bottled up for fear of retribution, more Republicans than you think oppose the nuclear option in their hearts. Tell them to vote their conscience, not the party line.

Whatever you say, say it now. Before it's too late.

Be sure to click through to your Senator's web site, where you should be able to find numbers for their local offices in addition to their DC office.

From downthread: CALL THESE REPUBLICANS. They are most likely to be swayed to our side!

28. I emailed them earlier. Gives numbers.
I got a reply from Norm and Dayton, or one of their people, but it seemed to actually follow my letter.

9. They will beat us on phone calls every time
Evangelical churches and the RNC run phone banks of volunteers and paid ops to flood calls, e-mails, and letters-to-the-editor from pre-written focus-group-tested templates. We got nothin' on that, not in our dying trade unions, not in our double-working-parent households, not even among the "Hollywood Elite." I even saw ads on CNN a few days ago, blasting the Dems for filibustering judicial nominees. Where's the Democratic response?

The GOP astroturf machine is well-planned, strongly financed, and organized to permanently mobilize the religious and racial bigots.

will support the filibuster (it wasn't really a worry).

12. Dayton's aide in Washington said 125 calls came in the last hour
in support of the filibuster and they hadn't gotten any before that. I laughed and told her about DU and the Minnesota forum.

That means Coleman is getting lots of calls, too.

Good work, Dickie and all DUers!

18. Thoughts on my email to Brownback? Please Read.
Edited on Wed May-18-05 05:30 PM by Scout1071
Dear Senator Brownback-

I have been reading, watching and listening to on-going debate regarding the filibuster of judicial nominees and I am adamantly opposed to you breaking with Senate tradition and history. There is no need to destroy the rights of the minority in this case. The simple truth is that no President in history has ever had as many judicial nominees confirmed as President Bush. These judges were rejected the first time around for good reason. They are the true activist judges that your party so vehemently condemns. At this point in President Clinton's term, your GOP had rejected more than 40 of his Judges. The Democratic leadership has even been willing to compromise on some of the judges. When are we going to see some compromising on the behalf of the Republicans? It's long overdue. This is not a one-party system.

On a side, I urge you to withdrawal your support for the Bolton nomination. The evidence is vast and clear that he is not the man for this or any other "diplomatic" position. Moving forward with this nomination will turn into an even bigger embarrassment for you and the GOP as more evidence regarding his character comes to light.

On a final note, I took the time to write to you before the invasion of Iraq. I asked you to supply any evidence that you or the Senate had obtained (wthin reason from a classified standpoint)that Saddam Hussein was in possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction or had any connection to Al Qaeda. You (or one of your staffers) replied that such evidence did exist and that Saddam was a grave threat to the US and you were fully backing the President. We now know that in reality, there were no WMD. There was no connection. My question to you is - were you lied to or misled by the Administration regarding the evidence? If so, why, in all-good conscience, are you continuing to support the Bush administration, trust their judgement on intelligence, judicial nominees, Social Security, health care (oh, that's right, this is a complete non-topic with the GOP), the environment, or anything else for that matter? 100,000 is an awfully high death toll for fabricated or unsubstantiated evidence. Does this ever weigh on your conscience? All the while your party has the nerve to chastise Newsweek for using only one, anonymous source? And after they twice ran the story past the Pentagon? Unbelievable.

Your majority is only 51%. Not exactly a mandate in my eyes. We are watching and you will be held accountable via my vote and many others.....even in this so called "Red State."

29. If my representatives vote because of phone calls, I will fire them.
Phone calls can be jammed with one group of radicals, it isn't a good barometer of how people feel about an issue. They better stick with upholding our constitution and not worry about a few phone calls from non-working religious nuts that stay at home all day making phone calls. The only true representation is at the polls when their up for re-election.
