"The Nuclear Option" on the table due to a lazy President
Edited on Wed May-18-05 08:50 PM by nytemare
Here we are, at the brink of the elimination of the filibuster because the Bushies want their judicial candidate given an automatic green light, despite their extremism.

The blocking of nine, yes, only nine of his 97 nominees were held back by the dems, seems to have Bush and Frist peeved enough that they are willing to change a Senate rule that has been in existance since the 1850's. In addition, Bush's appellate confirmation record is just about identical to Clinton's in their first terms.

The fact that we have gotten to this point seems very extreme to me. We could be at the brink of a shutdown of the Senate. I wonder, how difficult would it REALLY be for Bush to just PUT DIFFERENT NOMINEES FORWARD?????????

Why is this question not being asked?? Why isn't every Democrat and Moderate getting on TV asking not about why the Republicans want to go nuclear, but why Bush can't get off his bicycle, put "The Pet Goat" down, and do his fucking job? How hard would this really be? I am sure, there are other candidates that would be more palatable for everybody.

Here it goes, Bush. Put better qualified, less extreme nominees forward, they get voted through, just like the 88 of your nominees that have already made it through, and we don't have to do away with a major part of our checks and balances.

If he wants to project the image of the American being hard working and freedom loving, all he needs to do is roll up his fucking sleeves and get to work.

1. This is a Rove play
The latest CNN poll has the public at 51% against blocking judges. This puts Hillary in a jam (notice there has been no sight of her). If she votes to filibuster she can't win in a general election and if she doesn't she can't win the nomination. Very devious and very Rovian.

5. YUP! That's why it's tough as a Senator
Everyone else can sit this one out.

4. I would bet that poll was freeped
Was it an online poll? The numbers I saw a couple of weeks ago had something like 70% against getting rid of the filibuster.

I think it is dangerous for Frist if he does away with it. Rove is devious, though. And I can see how this whole issue could be a diversion from Bush's lack of work ethic, or whatever it is.

6. It was CNN with Judy and Wolf
Not online but didn't see who did it. I assumed it was CNN/Gallop but can't say that for sure.

8. Amazing how just a little wordplay gets different results.
70% (not exactly sure on that) against doing away with the filibuster, 51% against blocking judges. Says to me, well, maybe blocking judges isn't a good option, but getting rid of the filibuster would definately be worse!!

That is Rovian wordplay, though.

10. It cuts both ways
People are also against changing the rules. That's why nobody can really predict who will win or what will happen.

11. That is true
I don't think they have enough votes to get rid of the filibuster, or they would have done it.

9. The public can sodomise themselves with a crowbar.
Assuming, that is, that this was a real poll and not one of those online imitations (vote yes or no) with no statistically random sampling. If 51% of the public are all in favour of marching a bit further down the road to the black fortress of fascism, then to hell with them. And to hell with this miserably failed excuse for a republic, for that matter.

14. The Democrats aren't playing hardball enough.
If I were in Congress, I'd kick some ass.

I wouldn't get re-elected.

In fact, I'd probably get censured or even kicked out of the building.

2. You're absolutely correct. I haven't watched it all
as the filibuster issue has been ongoing on CSPAN, but Boxer mentioned this days ago. To paraphrase, out of all the people in this country, you (shrub) can't come up with any other nominees, and proceeded to name one.
He's acting like a spoiled little boy who has to get his way.

7. Exactly!
This is not rocket science. The senate won't confirm some of your judges, well, time to try again.

It escapes me how, rather than just doing that, the better option to them leads to where we are now.

I just don't frigging understand.

12. it has been said-
I saw a part of a news conference yesterday with Obama, Schumer, and I think Joe-mentum:

Obama made a very eloquent statement exactly to effect of "why not just send us more acceptable candidates", and pointed out that many conservatives have already been easily confirmed.

You can call it lazy if you want. I prefer to think of it as yet more evidence that our president is a rich, spoiled brat, who has essentially been given his way throughout his whole life, so he'll be damned if he's going to actually back down on this, even if he is getting 90% or more of his nominees confirmed already.

13. Good to hear it is being talked about
I haven't been able to watch too much tv the last week or so.

Lazy, or a petulant turd, either way, he isn't doing the work a President should do.

Thank you for telling me of the news conference!

:)

This is for a party dictatorship and it will be one of his legacies. The laws, precedents, and constitutional interpretation are all about to change folks. Say goodbye to the country you've known.
