2. Support the troops! Fight alongside them!
They of course can't, because they're pathetic cowards.

3. And you are typing from Iraq I presume?
What if they honestly wanted to put that on their car to remind people that there are troops overseas and a war going on. We of course do not need to be reminded but you don't really see it much in the MSM and in most conversations it's rarely mentioned. Is it now an empty meaningless, thing? Yes. But they're not all pathetic cowards. Some are actually vets. Some are actually activists. <sigh> meh-forget it.

4. Speaking to the vast majority of "magnetheads"
There are exceptions but I am willing to bet my life that by far, the vast majority of magnetheads are bu$h lickers who's ONLY "support" for the troops was to decorate their vehicle with "made in China" magnets.

11. Driving home yesterday...
I was behind a Grand Cherokee with a big "W'04" sticker in the middle of the window, the annoying yellow ribbon, and a "My son is serving in the US ARMY" sticker. How sad...voting for the asshat that put their son in grave danger and driving a vehicle that helps keep him there. Powerful force, that Kool-Aid... :(

13. Virtually every magnet where I work is because they belong
to family of soldiers already there.

5. yeah, I don't get the anger against the yellow magnets
bewilderment, bemusement, yes. But anger?

Obviously there are some class-A fuckheads driving around saying "SPORT DUH TRUPES" without giving a thought to what it might mean. Of course a lot of yellow-magnet people think Bush's shit doesn't stink. Certainly there are plenty of yellow magnets that are accompanied by gloating, creepy black "W" stickers.

But a lot of people are, as you say, merely reminding others of something that our SCLM would rather not have us consider--that we are in the middle of a civil war, & people are getting killed and/or hurt.

I don't get the point of being angry at these folks. we need them on our side.

6. Well, I certainly didn't expect to be jumped on this early.
I was referring to those who gangbusters-for-the-war young Republicans the extent of whose support for the troops ends at that yellow magnet. But oh well, I can be a whipping post if need be. Hope you feel better.

10. Sorry I thought my tone was moderate
If I was whipping you, you'd know it. I always like your posts Trotsky so I didn't mean to offend. It's just blanket statements and generalizations that annoy me. I for one enjoyed having my Kerry sticker near my support the troops one because I enjoyed the thought of RW drivers behind me having cognitive dissonance. "She supports the troops and Kerry? Huh? But but the commander in chief and the troops and god bless america and..." and then they would crash and burn and there would be one less Bush voter. A girl can dream.

12. S'ok, sorry to be defensive.
What I've found is that it's way too easy to have one particular group in mind and then write a post that to you looks very specific in addressing them but actually is pretty vague.

I've seen more than one "Support the troops - bring them home safe" ribbon so I know they aren't all bad.

14. Okie dokie
It's easy to be emotional when we are waging an illegal war, occupying a country, killing the civilans of that country in order to free them, and national guardsmen and reservists are dying overseas while the treasury is going bankrupt due to this madness. Yep, pretty darn easy to be emotional if you ask me.

 to trotsky.

7. I heard we are going to switch to "faith based" troop support
We're going to start giving ALL the money to Haliburton, uh, I mean the Iraqi people, you know to help with the re-building. And then we're going to offer our prayers for the safety of the troops. We're going to have to institute to prayer in school in order to generate enough prayer to give our brave soldiers the edge they need to fight evil. And if any of our soldiers die, it will be because liberals aren't praying enough.

but a lot of people with loved ones over there also have those magnets to remind people not to forget. But again, I see what you mean.

16. I get your's too.
From my vantage point, here in San Diego County, all I see is big SUV's with magnets.
This area is very conservative although the tide is shifting somewhat.

17. understand your point, but I think its dangerous to equate
Edited on Fri May-20-05 09:47 AM by Lerkfish
"supporting the troops" with republicans. I support the troops, just not their bosses. I don't want our young men and women to become cannon fodder for Bushitler, EVEN our republican young men and women. But I do not see how its a bad thing to support them while they're there, by trying to bring them home.

I think its a dangerous thing, to even in our own minds, make the cognitive link that support of troops automatically means republicans, because the flipside of that coin is not good: that only democratics don't support the troops. That's not what you want people to surmise.

IMHO

I had, for a while, a "support the troops, bring them home" ribbon on my car. I have had two nephews in the service, so I have no problem supporting the actual soldiers. Its their current mission I have a HUGE problem with.
