Do they compromise now only to go nuclear option for SCOTUS
nominee?

I've been wondering, the Repubs know it's not supported, that it looks like the power grab that it is. Basically Fristian told everyone to be ready to vote on Tuesday afternoon, so now there's a deadline.

Everyone's making speeches, and gathering in the backrooms trying to make deals. So how many are we willing to give up now in order to avoid the showdown? And why wouldn't Frist and crew simply be holding out until the last minute to get the best deal possible, as many of their redicals approved right now, show the country how "they" worked it out in spite of the "obstructionist Democrats"....

then keep muttering about how it needs to be changed and it's all the Dems fault...

then turn around and pull the Nuclear Option when Shrub gets to nominate someone for the Supreme Court?

1. I think they've already set a precedent
that if you don't like the rules, you can fight to change them unilaterally. This is all smoke and mirrors...if they are willing to fight for federal court nominees, they sure as hell will fight to the death for SCOTUS nominess. And then after that, they will fight our right to filibuster and deliberate over legislation.

4. Damn, I was hoping you'd point out some way that it couldn't be
done.

I guess it's back to my secret hope that all the really good computer hackers are probably Democrats! It may be the only way to save what's left of this country.

2. Listening to NPR this am
I had the same fear/anxiety. This will not go away, even if the filibuster ban vote fails, they will not go away. They are like pack of dogs who smell blood. The fundies and the repugs will never be civil again.

3. I heard the same story
The impression I got - no matter what deals are made now, the Repugs will still go nuclear to get a SCOTUS nominee installed. They dont care about civility or keeping their word, its all about power.

5. It's Down To 6 Repugnicans...
Snowe, Collins, Specter, Hagel, Chaffee and McCain seem to be the ones on the bubble here. Someone posted a great link showing how each Repugnican stood on this issue and these folks along with several others...including Graham, Voinovich, Sununu and Smith expressed their objection to eliminating the filabuster, but the curse of the Fristian goes deep.

What we're gonna see here is similar to the DeLay back room tactics used during the Clinton inquisition. Be assured than any Repugnican who dares to vote against Frist will not see a dime from the RNC and probably will face a well-funded challenger in the primaries. There's no give on this and any Repugnican who breaks ranks does so at extreme risk.

Yes, this is definitely about the Supreme Court...as the elimination of the 3/5th rule would apply to all judicial nominations and make it easy to ram either Slappy Thomas or Big Tony Scalia at SCOTUS Chief Justice then a Roy Black to replace them. Also I would expect a lot of pressure to be placed on Sandra Day-O'Connor to take that much talked about retirement as well.

The Democrats have to stay solid and show strength. I say bring it all on. Let the foxes run wild through the hen house. Let those who voted for this regime to really get what's coming to them. And also maybe it might finally wake up the millions on our side from Desperate Housewives, Michael Jackson Puppet Theater and other mind-numbing games and start speaking up and taking a stand against all that's being done.

6. How does it really matter?
If the 'Thugs use the 'nuclear option' now, they can appoint anyone they want to the SCOTUS later ANYWAY...

The longer the Dems can hold them off, the better...

Or, perhaps I am just being naive...
